All about Mary

Here is a list of titles given to Mary, Wife of Joseph and Mother of Jesus. How many of these are Biblical? how are they Biblical? There are a few that are actually titles (names) of God and Christ yet it seems Mary has been given them as well so I am wondering what is the Biblical justification of these names for Mary. Just so you know there are, so far, 708 titles in this list. If anyone can provide Biblical justification for these I'd appreciate it. BTW there are some I do agree with but by far the majority just seem to be excessive.

According to scripture i would say pretty much none of those are biblical(didn't look through the whole list but keep reading).

The Bible calls her Mary, the virgin, and it's a stretch to say its a name but blessed. So one name and two titles that i know of. I would think the rest of them are not Biblical, but i guess you could call her what ever you want. Sounds like a lot of false idol talk to me though.

Thanks Jacksnight for your reply. I have been looking at various titles given to people Like Mary and comparing them to those in the Bible given to Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit and Mary comes out with hundreds more. Seems to me as though there is a personality cult happening. I will go through the list over the coming week and add what Biblical references I can find to clarify things up a bit.

Basillica of Saint Mary Major

This is the name of a very ancient church in Rome. The Major (Maggiore in Italian) refers to its large size. I am not sure how this could be called a name for Mary.

Where did you get this list? Or did you compile it yourself? I have not heard even a fraction of these titles and I have been Catholic for over 30 years. I think maybe this list is too large an elephant to eat in a bite. How do you propose we discuss this?

Madonna of Saint Luke

This is the name given to several paintings that reflect the story that Saint Luke, while researching his Gospel, did a painting of the Virgin Mary. Again, I do not see how this was ever used as a title of Mary.

Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows

This is a feast day (September 15) celebrated in the Catholic church to remember the grief of Mary during the Passion. It is the fulfillment of Simeon's prophesy in Luke 2:35, "And a sword will pierce your own soul too."

Feast of the Immaculate Conception

This is another feast day (December 8).

This is the title of Saint Mary of Oegnies, who was born at Nivelles, France in 1167, and died on June 23rd, 1213, of natural causes. This does not refer to the Virgin Mary.

This is the name of a series of statues that can be found in Benoite-Vaux, France. The statues have been destroyed at various times in history. The last time the shrine was restored was in the year 1830. The successor statue of Our Lady of Benoite-Vaux that is currently venerated there is very old, and is said to resemble the original, and was crowned in 1875.

This seems to refer to another statue. I pulled this from the Roman Catholic Saints website. It is about a hermit that carved the statue.
"This scenery, melancholy, but not without grandeur, which reminded one of Thebais, had doubtless some analogy with the deep and austere thoughts of the anchorite; he made himself a cell on one of the prominent peaks of the mountain, and hallowed out of the rock, on a level with the eagles’ nests, an oratory to the Mother of God, Our Lady of Rocamadour."

The point of this thread is to see how these things are Biblical. If there are Biblical references for a title I'll add it to the OP next to the title, if it is an accurate reference. You see I believe Mary is lifted up in the minds of humanity higher than she should be. When a human has at least 708 titles given to her and I can't find anywhere near that number for all 3 individuals in the Godhead combined I think there may be a problem.

Since the devotions came after the compilation of the Bible, it is a waste of time to look in the Bible for them. keltoi, are you serious about this effort? If you are serious about researching these titles, then I will help; but the length of your list seems to suggest cut and paste apologetics. Typically when I run into this, discussion is not really the point of the OP. If you want to discuss, I will expect you to pull as much of the weight as I do.

This is the title of Saint Mary of Oegnies, who was born at Nivelles, France in 1167, and died on June 23rd, 1213, of natural causes. This does not refer to the Virgin Mary.

You are right in a sense. The website, Roman Catholic Saints, has an article titled Our Lady of Oegnies. The actual article is about St. Mary of Oegnies, who was a woman that lived in France in the 12th century. Our Lady of Oegnies is a shrine in that French town that inspired her to a religious life. In this shrine there is a statue of the Virgin Mary. So properly the title could refer to the shrine or the statue; but not the nun.

This brings up an interesting point and that is that I don't feel that this list should include works of art just because they depict the Virgin Mary. Perhaps we could take a few of these and see if they are related to a certain event in that area that inspired the work of art. However that leaves us in the role of historian trying to look at ancient events and trying to prove or disprove their veracity. Many of these Marian apparitions have been investigated by the Catholic Church. Nearly all of these investigations result in the ruling that there is not sufficient proof to merit bringing this to the attention of the church as a whole. So the devotion to the event is memorialized in a local shrine or a statue and the populace may venerate this event through the shrine.

If you disagree with these local devotions, I would like to hear your reasoning. Is it based on a scepticism about the truth of the apparition in the first place? Is it based on the thought that statues are breaking the second commandment? Is it based on the thought that these works of art and the devotions related to them are excessive and that the work of art is worshipped? Or do you have another reason?

Mary was addressed as " highly favored " by an angel and Mary called herself "the Handmaid of the Lord "
Mary showed she had the faith and trust God needed from her to be the vessel for our Savior. But there is not a lot of information about Mary or Joseph and they quickly fade from the pages of the New Testament gospels. Jesus loved them both dearly.
As much as she was honored according to the Bible she does not have the deity to be prayed to. Hail Marys are not based on Bible scripture but rather from Catholic tradition.
There is only one intermediary between God and man and that person is Jesus Christ -Romans 8:34, Hebrews 7:25, Hebrews 9:24
Mary is never mentioned in the Bible as an intercessor, or advocate between God and man.

You may be right in what the title is applied to but even then that seems to be idolatry.

My university studies have focused on history, Aboriginal Studies, Archaeology, and Anthropology, with a little bit of psych thrown in for good measure. I'm not adverse to looking at traditions in fact I enjoy it. If we can separate the titles given through tradition from the titles that are Biblical that would be a good effort.

You have pretty well summed it up here. I'm open minded after I have faith in Jesus even though I have never seen him but I have seen and felt the Holy Spirit working. I am concerned that some of these, if not all, are used for ulterior motives.

Not at all but what I believe is that relevant precedents would have occurred in the Bible. What has happened after these "apparitions" have been seen? In the Bible each time someone was visited by an angel or someone like Moses or Elijah something happened, what has happened after one of these events since the Holy Spirit come and took Christ's place with us?
