I love Grunge! Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, I love 'em all.

Although I'm mostly a Metal fan, good Grunge is just plain good to hear.

I do like Audioslave, good to hear Grunge that's new back on the radio I must say. After hearing a number of Audioslave songs, I had to go and dig out some of my Nirvana and other Grunge CDs, I got seriously in the mood.

To me, it's pointless to argue whether or not Kurt or whoever saved or ressurected Rock music. To me, it never died in the first place. Rock is eternal.

AstroFan and Caley, In the man in a box, there is a line that says "Jesus Christ, deny your maker" Just that alone would be enough of a clue for even the most liberal Christian.
As far as what they claim the song being about animals being eaten, "In a box" is a metaphore for containing something and anylizing it. Now I have not read the lyric sheet but it implies to me that they are refering to God, as if you could really put Him in a box and anylize Him. I may be mistaken about this whole thing out of ignorance to the band, and I did not mean to ruffle any feathers. However, the one line about Jesus is enough to turn me off.

You can say what you want about the merits of Nirvana's music (I happen to like them), but you can't say they did nothing for grunge rock. They brought it to the mainstream, in much the same way that the Beatles did with rock n' roll. I'm not saying this is necessarily a good thing, although it could be, but you cannot deny that Nirvana was an important band. Oh, and what's so wrong with being a punk band? Punk is probably the single most important development of rock music in the past 25-30 years.

I completely disagree with everything you've said. Didn't do anything? Grunge music litterally exploded after the debut of Nevermind. Alice in Chains (which had been going for the 'heavy metal' scene) suddenly switched apperance and donned the flannel and jeans uniform of grunge (look at their first version of the Man in the Box video). Copycat, corporate created bands, like Stone Temple Pilots (originally called Mighty Joe Young, I think), spawned left and right. Helmet, a band I like, was given an unprecedented 3 Million for a 3 record deal without their first worldwide release even being played on the radio. Corp radio was looking to capture the 'next Nirvana'.

Nirvana was at the center of the Seattle musical scene that became 'grunge'. Along with Soundgarden, Mudpuppy, Pearl Jam, etc. They were not a punk band, although they, like punk, went against the popular grain. Nirvana never claimed to be anything, and would not have wanted to be badged as grunge, but they basically were.

Could it be possible that he's not saying TO deny your maker, but acknowledging Jesus as our maker and singing against those that deny that?

Just a thought.
no, its not possible. look at the lyrics of "God ***" off of their their self-titled album. they are very anti-God.

I always thought the Man In THe Box song was about how this guy was dead... laying in his coffin (aka, the Box.)

And that AiC song is entitled, God Am. This song is about how God gives forgiveness but the World still hurts alot. The title does sound bad, and the Lyrics do to but when I look at them it looks more of a, God saves me, God wins his faith, but in the end he still has to pay his taxes.

Nirvana? No musical talent? Yah I guess you're right. They only set the stage for many of todays rock, and brought grunge in mainstream (grunge/punk). Lyrically they have nothing? Ever heard All Apologies? I swear every teenager feels like that song. Musically they have nothing? I dare you to create a catchier riff then that off Smells Like Teen Spirit, Lithium, In Bloom. They didn't do anything spectactular with the guitar, but they knew how to crreate unbelievably catchy tunes.

Pearl Jam - Ten, one of the top 10 greatest albums of all time.

Couldnt have said it better myself.

Nirvana = the most over rated band of all time.

They had no talent except for the drums. Voice sucked, lyrics sucked, guitar sucked. What songs do all beginner guitar players learn first?... Nirvana Songs.... Why?.... Because they only had two or three chords.

Some Alice and chains stuff I like. Wasnt ever a big Sound Garden fan but I can recognize talent and they had some.

I'm ashamed to say that I'm from Seattle because the "Seattle sound" is horrible.

If Kurt hadnt of ended his life the way he did he wouldnt be the legand he is today. He and Nirvana would of faded out like the rest of them.

Not trying to argue with anyone, but I do hope that you all realize that secular music (expecially heavy metal) is almost like playing with fire. It says in Psalms that our music is to glorify God. And bands like Alice In Chains and Nirvana DO NOT glorify our Lord and Savior. Music is a very powerful tool. When satan was an angel, he was the lead angel of praise and worship, but he thought that he could be better than God. And God threw him out of heaven. The Bible says that he fell as lightning. But, my point is...satan uses music to draw people away from God. You may not think it's that bad or is not going to hurt you. But, think about it before you listen to secular music. Is it glorifying God? Is it uplifting your spirit? God Bless!!!

Satan uses just about anything to draw people away from God... music, television, the Internet, sports, boyfriends/girlfriends, and sometimes even church. Are you going to stop watching sports though, or stay off the computer forever? No.

I wasn't really into grunge much in HS when it was exploding everywhere-- thrash metal and prog rock held fast my ear's attention -- but the two grunge bands I really dug were Soundgarden and AIC. I didn't so much like AIC for the vocals but for the music; Soundgarden, on the other hand, was the whole package...
I never much cared for Nirvana-- I thought they were overrated, too much hype-- and Pearl Jam was so overplayed among my circle of friends that it made me want to be sick after a while.
While I can see Nirvana's influence on the grunge movement and other groups that followed, I agree with some of the other posters that Kurt's death has lionized the band to an extent. If he hadn't died, would Nirvana still be on a pedestal above all other "first-wave" grunge bands? (Premature celebrity deaths do have a tendency to do things like that...) In the end it's difficult to say, but my gut instinct says "no". Just my two bits... :)

I will agree, Foo Fighters have put out consistantly better music than Nirvana, therby busting that whole myth....
