  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones found liable for damages in lawsuits brought by parents of Sandy Hook shooting victims

Ah, here we go: Alex Jones Liable for Defamation in Sandy Hook 'Hoax' Case

Judge Barbara Bellis took the rare step of defaulting Jones in the defamation lawsuits for his and his companies' “failure to produce critical material information that the plaintiffs needed to prove their claims.” The default means the judge found in favor of the parents and will hold a hearing on how much damages he should pay.

Have to go back to the age old saying: "If you dont have anything good to say, dont say anything at all"

The bible says that the kisses of the enemy are deceitful. But in these days....we are only allowed to kiss......so it will be hard to tell friend from foe.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over this. Alex Jones has been spewing garbage for years. He basically stole some of my best friends with his emotional manipulation and outright lies, and in the case of Sandy Hook, he took it way too far.

I'm in favor of free speech, but the constitution doesn't protect a right to incite violence or cause material harm with one's speech, and neither does the bible.

But who judges material harm caused by speech? Is it not true that there will be someone who takes offence to anything said or any position taken on any topic? When can a line be drawn? The best and only course or action to take is to remain silent.....which im all for.

It is encouraging to see some people are held accountable for their reprehensible behavior. Many folks mistakenly believe freedom of speech comes with freedom from the consequences. How many "martyrs" can the republican party exploit anyhow? Sooner or later Americans will realize these folks aren't martyrs but rather criminals who've been exploiting passionate voters for their own self-interests!

The views and opinions expressed in this post you just read are just letters and words and do not necessarily reflect the official opinion of the writer.

If you would like my direct opinion on a subject, you can ask for it directly and it will be given......If I feel the opinion would not lead to a lawsuit or the hurting of another's feelings.

Well I guess good for them. There are lots of people who I think need some suing and many of them are on the other side of the political fence so hopefully this will be the start of a trend for that.

A process of growth. When I was a child, I thought and behaved as one. One must learn to put away childish things. A few reports we help one appreciate silence as well.

If you have further questions for me you can start another thread or PM....I will no longer detract from the OP.

Indeed. The first amendment prevents the government from stopping free speech. It prevents the gov't from throwing you in jail for saying "the war is/was wrong" or "the president is demonic". Libel/slander laws have always existed. You can't just say anything you want without consequences.

And by definition, defamation hurts people.

The judge.
At this point, it is too late.... I was enquiring about something a little more proactive. What can we say....and what views can be expressed that will, without a doubt, offend no one?

Yes, libel and slander laws have existed for decades. It feels discouraging to witness how rarely said laws seem to be enforced. Perhaps this ruling will bring more discretion from entertainers in the "news" business and they will try to verify their content before spreading it to the masses. I'm being quite optimistic in hoping for more discretion from partisan media of course. I try to accentuate the positives. Peace

Well, speech can be more than just an opinion of course, it can sometimes be a lie that directly harms other people.

For instance, if I tell the public that the death of my neighbor's child is a 'hoax', implying my neighbor is a liar and faker....then that slanders my neighbor's reputation in the broader public.

A libel/slander. A direct damage to them.

Slander/libel in America for centuries now has been something that can end up in court and the perpetrator can be held liable. And that's a good thing.

So, there has never been a 'freedom' to harm others with speech, basically. And we have courts to help us carefully examine instances and bring justice.

I, personal, am against speaking/thinking negative of another even if the speech is true. I cant imagine the pain that has to be cause by hearing someone say you children is alive after you know they were murdered.

I hope these judgements are saved for extreme cases like these...

It seem the internet has empowered single line statements that are invented junk but make an enemy look bad, must be true, because the enemy are bad.

It has taken me sometime to unpack some of the emotional logic. That group over there are so bad, whatever we invent against them is ok, and gives us an excuse to hate them. When we used to be feudal societies, it was belonging to the group that mattered not truth, purity or honesty.

On some forum a group would say stuff to get a jib, which they would then use as an example of how bad the person was who said it. Alex Jones has tapped into this approach.
One advisor to Trump used the philosophy that you should say the most extreme things about your opponent because it gets press coverage and stirs people up which is worth more than anything else.

What stops this approach is educating people as to what these groups are doing and why. Then you can get down to facts. After listening to Alex Jones and his stuff, it is so crazy, I just walk away. When he harms innocents for real, like at Sandy Hook, he needs to pay real time.

Sadly I learnt in the reformation both protestant and catholic armies lied about terrible things the other side had done, so doing terrible things in revenge was ok. This is the road paved to hell, and it killed 25% of europes population. I hope and pray we are kept from such a fate. God bless you

The Bible says, “You shall not bear false witness.” If you are using factual information to criticize someone, that is acceptable. If you spread a lie about someone that causes loss, it may be proven to be slander, defamation or libel.
