  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thanks for reopening this thread.

Barley is not offtopic because it is a main ingredient in beer.

Barley is also forbidden in those with gluten sensitivities as it contains the highest amount of gluten.

I have a cousin with Celiac and barley sensitivity. He becomes psychotically violent in the presence of barley. His relatives (not related to me) also have this problem with barley, and they are Welsh.

So, one must ask:

If a person were to commit rape under the influence of beer, and then claim it was the barley malt that made him black out, would a judge buy that story? In the case of a PA man, the judge and jury ruled that he was guilty.

My priest told me that in my case, knowingly eating or drinking anything with barley in it, including beer, would be morally wrong.

The argument that alcohol leads some people to illicit sex and violence and therefore is wrong is not particularly strong. I mean, traffic accidents kill 1 million people a year and injure 40 million people a year worldwide, but are cars wrong?
Cars do not only kill people and animals but they're also bad for the environment. I'm definitely not pro-car, and it would do us all good if we had fewer cars in the world.

Maybe you don't know any people who are anti-car but you do know people who are anti-alcohol, but believe me, there are definitely people who think cars are wrong. (And before anyone starts, I know the sentence "guns don't kill people, people kill people", but that's a cop-out. I know that cars don't have a morality, neither does alcohol, neither do guns. Still we can discuss the morality of using them.)

If God didn't want us to drink he wouldn't have turned wine into his blood
No, that would be if it were the other way round. God turning wine into blood could just as well mean that he didn't want us to drink wine. Otherwise why change it into something else?
(It is a good argument against vegetarianism though. :p )

Still I agree with you, but that's because at the wedding in Cana Jesus made more wine - even at a point where the folks were already getting drunk. So that proves that he wasn't anti-alcohol.

There are many posts about sexual acts but what about the immorality in alcohol. This leads many to illicit sexual relations and even some to violence.

Do you view alcohol as wrong?

I, personally, feel as though the use of alcohol does not lead to sexual relations or violence that would not normally occur. The abuse of alcohol can lead to lowered inhibitions, but those inclinations to have sex - or to be violent - are already present.

I hate it when people use the phrase, "Well.. I wouldn't have done it, but I was drunk." That's bulljive. Chances are, it probably would've taken you longer to get to the point of doing it, but you would have done it anyway. Alcohol just gives one an excuse. A lame one, but an excuse nonetheless. Even when you are smashed, you still have that internal moral compass that does not sleep.

I don't believe alcohol consumption, in and of itself, is wrong. However, the misuse of it is. Inebriation should not be the goal of Christians - though I will admit to having been there a few times in the past. :sorry:

It is wrong. Jesus never drank wine only the fruit of the wine(grape juice). here's a source about how alcohol is wrong-Leviticus 10:9.
i still don't know why some churches serve real wine in communion...

So he didn't drink it he just made it and gave it to others?

Are you calling Jesus a hypocrite?

Do you know how quickly grape juice ferments? The only reason we have grape juice instead of wine is because of mister Welch.

You see, there's this thing called CONTEXT. Read the verse and determine if it applies to not drinking at all or just not drinking in a specific instance. Get back to us when you find out.

nope, and I dont view sex as wrong either. As far as sex and alchoal if you are going to partake you should have a great deal of common sense, being able to ascertain a situation and know when it a bad idea to drink and have your senses about you and your hand in your pocket on your glock or if you can let your hair down so to speak. Also its WAY better to be in a monogomus relationship because the sex is WAY better and WAY more consistant
