  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I live in Ireland!

'nuff said!

(But I do think it is important to drink in moderation. I'd have the odd really mad night where I'd have a bit too much, but most nights out I'd have maybe 5 or 6 pints, be sociable, have a bit of a dance, chat to some ladies, get shot down. The usual! I'm not an aggressive drunk at all though, no matter what state I'm in. Some people just can't handle the drink, and go out and try to pick a fight after the first drink. Luckily, such people are easy to distract with shiny things while I make my getaway!)

Alcohol is fine in moderation...Except for Absinthe that stuff is just pure evil.

Absinthe is brilliant! It can sneak up on you though, if you ain't careful. I once drank about half a bottle in one sitting, without realising it...Then I went up to the pub. Needless to say, I spent most of the night in the toilets...

Alcohol killed both of my parents, one was by a 19 year old drunk driver. I was 7 years old.
I am in recovery for addiction and basically started out just like some of you having a good time. Be careful because the progression of it will get you without knowing it.

What gets me is the bars not allowing smoking ( they say smoking kills) But alcohol doesn't? I can see not smoking in restaurants, or places like that.
We also have a place in town next to the nice bars, a cigar smoking lounge. Another scratches head moment, but I guess if Arnold Schwarzeneggar does it then it is cool. lol and ok then.

Anyway just popping in to say be careful ok, addiction doesn't care who you are.

"One review of many studies found that people who drink 6 units a day have triple the risk of mouth cancer and double the risk of oesophageal cancer, compared to non-drinkers.6 That’s the same as two pints of premium lager or three standard glasses of wine."

As many have said, the only issue is really when the alcohol interferes with your life...at least in my opinion. I drink here and there, but mostly in social situations and not to get drunk off my rear. Yes, that link is showing that some people who drink have triple the risk of mouth cancer, but those are people drinking two pints or three glasses of wine *per day*. I'm sure a lot of people drink that much, but I myself am not one of them.

I have alcoholism in my family too.
I do as well, which is why I'm personally super careful when it comes to alcohol. I do drink, but as I said above...occasionally and not to get snookered.

Tangent: It's because drinking doesn't inherently affect people around you. Smoke lingers and spreads out and people have to breath it in even if they don't really want to. It's often used as an employee health & safety measure - employees are usually unaffected by patrons drinking, but they can't avoid smoke. Drinking becomes a problem when people drink too much, which is why some regions have laws against serving visibly drunk patrons more alcohol.

Personally, I love the smoking bans. I can go to a bar and not come home smelling like an ash tray. It's also prompted more restaurants to have outdoor areas, which is nice.

There are many posts about sexual acts but what about the immorality in alcohol. This leads many to illicit sexual relations and even some to violence.

Do you view alcohol as wrong?
throw in smoking too.
Both cause way too many problems.
Unfortunately society is generally so addicted to these that taking them away would have extreme effects.

Here's the thing about alcohol. Even drunk, you're not going to do something you don't want to do. It lowers your inhibitions; it doesn't force you to do anything. Usually when people devolve into rowdy drunks and go out and have drunken sex, it is because they get drunk with the intent to do just that.

I drink alcohol on occasion and I have never been drunk. It isn't wrong. It's just as wrong as food. Food can make a person fat if you eat too much of it.

Have you ever heard of a black out? Looking back I have done several things I regret doing and, never wanted to do ever. It is like the Jekyll and Hyde situation. Many times the regrets of doing what we did while drunk or in a blackout brings us down enough to seek help, at least it was the case with me.
And your right food is an addiction as well?

Please explain how I am addicted to anything when I, at most, have three glasses of wine a week and one of those is during the Sabbath Kiddush? Going to take my wine away from me for that too?

I have had black outs just from eating those Tiger Milk bars which are loaded with barley malt. One day, I ate a Tiger Milk bar (I was addicted to them), went to the doctor's office, came home, and then called the doctor to apologize for missing my appointment. [Please reread that sentence.] The nurse told me that I had just seen the doctor, asked me to check my purse for the allergy prescription, and then told me to get it filled immediately. To this day, I have no knowledge of what I said or did during that doctor's visit. Thank goodness I was not out on a date or I could have been raped and would have had no knowledge.

It took me three years to overcome that addiction. In fact, I would call AA and ask them to talk me out of eating those protein bars.

Later on, I found out that barley malt caused me to have a form of amnesia and I would space out because of it. That means I cannot even eat donuts and beer because they are both made with barley flour. To this day, I must read labels because barley in soup makes me very sick with flu like symptoms.

And yes, I am Irish and Cherokee. Both have a tendency to experience black outs.

Oh wow, I have never heard of that before. Could it be that you are allergic to them? And I am glad you made it home safely too.

There is an alcoholic treatment program that is approved by the California court system where patients must abstain from eating any grains - corn, wheat, rye, oats, and barley. It is a tough program, but a friend went on this program after she was convicted of DUI. She lost a little weight too.

And yes, I am atopic allergic to foods, pollens, and drugs, and have had life threatening asthma attacks and hives. Once my throat started to close from a Novocaine injection at a dentist office. In addition, my allergy specialist told me to stay away from areas where grass is being cut or I could suffer anaphylactic shock. Whenever I do gardening, I experience miserable flu like symptoms for at least three days due to my sensitivity to molds, dust mites, and pollens.

I don't. But when I see people who seem to be saying "Ban ban ban", I give examples where you might have to back off that. The best example in my mind right now would be Catholic churches that use wine.

If the catholic church can either/or get everyone to use it sensibly to use it wisely or the right processes/laws in place so that it can only be given in such amounts as to be "safe" or processes laws in place so that the cars and intoxication incidents are reduced significantly or better if violence and intoxication incidents are reduced significantly.
Or can figure out a way to create synthehol that has the properties of alcohol sans intoxication. Then sure no ban.

You'd probably do what happened before: Religious exceptions to the ban, yes?
