• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

When you are struggling with alcohol you need to get your eyes off of your weakness/habit and get your mind on God. The bible says: "Walk in the spirit and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh." What does that mean: Read the bible more, listen to good music, praising and worshipping God, less time worrying, less time trying to figure out your problem, less time struggling, less time being afraid that if you don't overcome this God will reject you and more time just Hanging on the vine. Guess what? God will give you the strength to overcome that weakness and that flaw. If you are struggling with something you don't need to put more effort in it you need to spend more time with God, you don't need to call up four friends ask them what to do you need to spend more time with God. Hang on the vine brothers:

I think it's important to be careful with rote answers, especially dealing with substance abuse. There can be very deep and underlying issues going on and while ultimately the correct answer is to focus on God sometimes it just doesn't work. Perhaps the person has lost faith or trust in God. I've seen it happen. Strong Christians, get deeply injured (usually by another Christian unfortunately) and end up turning to some substance to kill the pain. That brings on guilt, which makes them stop seeking God, which brings on more guilt, which.....it's very circular and dangerous. Very stealth and very deadly.

This is very true, from the christian community who some just really don't understand just how powerful addiction is.

For me though, it took me to completely fall on my face and almost die before I reached out my hand to God for help.
Yes, I prayed went to church... but really in the subconscious I was unaware of my denial. It wasn't until God really shined a light upon that truth, I was able to fully give it all to God.

I know now to ask God to show me the truth that I so easily block.

Thanks for this comment. I agreed with everything UnitynLove said, but addiction can make it very difficult to apply the ideas that he said. I never lost faith in God. I always believed that he could miraculously make me recover. I just thought I wasnt worthy enough for him to show a miracle through me.
