Is this guy really trying to win the Presidential Election or what? I'm dead serious, because I'm wondering if he's actually trying to win, if he thinks he has a chance to win, and or if he's just running in order to get some publicity...
I personally think he knows he cannot win and is just running to supplant Jesse Jackson as the new leader in the black community. Hey at least Sharpton is the most hilarious of the bunch. I give the man credit for his sense of humor...

He's not the only one running that doesn't (realistically) stand a chance. I guess for some people they just have to do what they think is right even when they know they don't have a chance of succeeding.

And what abotu Al Gore? I bet he'd most likely win the election if he ran, same goes with McCain. He'd be the current pres of the USA right now if he didn't drop out of the race Early Early 1999.
I would have been satisfied with McCain. I think he's a good gent.
Al Gore has some strong name recognition, but I'm not sure how a fight between him and Bush would pan out given the 2000 election.

I doubt Gore would have won if he had of ran this time around. McCain would have made an interesting president. I disagree strongly with him on McCain-Feingold (mainly over free speech issues rather than the $ limits), but I do like and respect him. If Rumsfeld retires next year, McCain would make an excellent SecDef.

The Black community does not recognize anyone as their leader!

That's the first time we've agreed on anything. You're very right. there are 9 Democrats that don't stand a chance of winning the election

He's just there to put up opposition. It's all you can do in a 2 party stranglehold. All "third party" candidates are just vote-diverters.

Sharpton is a racist and a demagogue, he's just trying to draw black voters away from the dems and GOP - failing miserably I might add.

Farrakhan has a better chance.

Dear Osel...

It is interesting that you should compare Farrakhan to Sharpton and see Farrakhan as being less than a demagogue as Sharpton.

I may be totally off base, but a statement like that sounds woefully ill-informed! At least Sharpton's mythology is grounded in Judeo-Christian tradtion. If you have studied the Nation of Islam carefully, you need to account for the origin and effect of the "flying saucer/evil scientist Creator" theology in Frarrakhan's philosophy.

As far as "all" 3rd-Party candidates being "vote diverters (sic)," you are confusing intentions with effects.

1. The Farrakhan comment was meant in sarcastic jest and not in seriousness.

2. I am aware of their ideologies.
I do not believe "Judeo-Christianity" exists.

3. I am aware of their intentions. I pointed out the effects.

It's a shame. The two party system's gotta go.

To answer your question, winning the Presidential election was never really the main purpose of Rev. Al Sharpton running for office. His purpose for running was to bring black issues to the forefront of the debates, and he has done so. He repeatedly makes an important point that his opponents ignore: the Democratic Party is reliant on the support of black voters to be competitive in national politics. Democrats have assumed that they will get the black vote no matter what positions they take on the issues, and Al Sharpton is holding them accountable. Furthermore, he not only addresses issues that would normally go unaddressed, but he is more entertainihg than the other candidates. I get the biggest kick out of watching him make Howard Dean squirm. ^_^

As far as I'm concerned, Rev Al Sharton has done for the Presidential debates, what Venus and Serena have done for women's tennis. I applaud him for that.

The current polls say otherwise. Only 51% of voters say they will vote for Bush next year. That number will drop unless the WMDs are found or an Al Qeada link is found before the election. If either is found the Bush will surely win.

That's not the only option available to Bush in order to win. He can always start another war. :p
