Hey, just wanted to let y'all know that I'm still learning (or trying to...) how to use ICQ. I just added a couple of you, I think. I'm confused about how to know if someone is currently online or not. I just recieved messages from 2 people, and I proceded to have a conversaiton with myself for a little while because I thought they were logged in! LOL! What a dork!

DId you try beefing up your privacy settings? I don't have this problem. Anyone that wants to talk to me has to ask permission first.

Of course I didn't mean you or anyone else from TAW. Last time I was logged into that one, I ended up talking to some guy (who I mistaken thought was from TAW or else I wouldn't have accepted his request) who believed himself to be a good friend of President Bush (even though he lives in England ), a professional fly fisherman, and I don't remember what else he said. He spent a while being flirty with me (meanwhile I was trying to figure out how to politely tell him to take his Thorazine and call it a night... ), and then admitted he was married and old enough to be my father. At that point I could've cared less about politeness, so I logged out. What a trip.

Photini, yes, they did have to ask my permission to talk to me. I just got tired of getting requests.

Tch, that's nothing, I used to work with a guy who was...

*related to the British royal family

*8th generation directly descended from Sitting Bull (stick an "h" in there somewhere and it would be more accurate )

*a martial arts master

*a member of a secret government task force (for what I have no idea)

*a messenger from God

*numerous other things I never bothered to listen to...

I really felt sorry for the guy that he felt he had to make up such outrageous things to get people to like him. He really was a good guy underneath all the insecurities.

My "rule of thumb" is that I absolutely won't talk to anyone unless they have their profile filled out and I see something in there that would make me want to talk to them...i.e. that they're Orthodox. I've actually talked to several people from Russia and Romania and one from Georgia (the country) through ICQ.

(I took a long nap and now I can't sleep even though I have to be "up" in a few short hours to chant another half morning, so I'm reading old threads. Oh, man and woman, what am I doing... )

Um, anyway.

So like, back in the day, one used to be able to run topical interest searches on AIM and these would turn up an assorted, random number of people online at the moment. For the last couple years, though, when I try this, I only get an alphabetical list of people who are mostly offline. Have thye just changed it, or am I doing something wrong? How can one still run a more restricted search for people to talk to?

Lichenstein is a teeny tiny country in Europe, located between Switzerland and Austria, which speaks German (but of course, baby!) and has enough people in it to half fill up Heinz Field in Pittsburgh!

Really? I didn't know GAIM did all that. I've been using kopete on linux for my AIM and MSN. I need to get it set up for Yahoo as well.

Okay, so I'm messing around with ICQ again cuz I'm bored. Does anyone know how to look at other people's profiles before talking to them? I can't figure out how to do that.
