Hi there,

I am agnostic, and am searching to believe in christ. Why? Well, although it may not be the most dignified reason, I really have true feelings of love for a chrisitian girl I have been ambiguously seeing for quite some time. I want to believe, because I really want to be with her. Are there other former agnostic/atheists out there who have since accepted Jesus and could help me out? How did you come to believe?
And yes, I have been attending church and reading parts of the bible to no avail. Thanks.

Hey Holden 11,

How's your day going so far? I'm glad, as I'm sure a great deal of us are, that you are delving into the Christian faith with a desire to believe, regardless of the reason.

While I'm not agnostic or atheist, I have flirted with the two as all people probably do sometime in their life. What you're probably looking for is a firm intellectual grasp on the validity of Christianity: the historicity of Christ and Christianity, the nature of Scripture and Tradition, ect. That's good! Reason plays a significant part in our acceptance of any truth - religion or otherwise.

If you haven't already, I would advise reading over who is in my mind one of the most well-versed contemporary apologists for the Faith, William Lane Craig. His website is as follows:

http://www.leaderu.com/offices/billcraig/menus/

Also, Josh McDowell is an excellent apologist, who like you, at one time did not believe. C.S. Lewis is as well.

Hopefully more people will come and attempt to help you. God Bless - and take it a step at a time, questioning and examining everything.

-Spotty

Perhaps I am reading this incorrectly, but you are wanting to believe in Christianity solely to help your relationship with a girl then?

The Christian says: Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger well there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desires well there is such a thing as sex. If I find myself with a desire which no expreience of this world can satisfy, the most probible explanation is it was made for another world.
-CS Lewis

I suggest you try praying the rosary. If you don't know how I can tell you. It will bring you closer to God.

Hey Holden11,

I agree with JJM on the prayer piece. The rosary is great because you meditate on all aspects of Jesus' life from birth to the miracles and His death and resurrection. One thing to recognize is that there is more to understanding Jesus than to just believe that He existed. Satan knows Jesus exists and Satan knows that Jesus is the son of God, however Satan can never say Jesus is Lord because he hates Jesus and will not submit himself to Christ. So recognize that as you go through this process you need to engage your intellect but also your heart. Prayer, even if you don't know who or what you are praying to will help because God will hear your heart, know your need and fill you with the wisdom and understanding you are looking for.

A line in the bible you are sure to relate to will be in the Gospel of Mark, Chapter 9 verse 24 "I believe, help my unbelief" I recommend you periodically repeat that to God and He is faithful, because He has loved you before you have even come to acknowledge Him, to answer your prayer.

Understand that if this girl you like is a Christian she will not be satisfied with a guy who gives lip service to Christ; who says "yeah, I believe in Jesus" but who doesn't make Jesus Lord over his life and trust me it won't be easy....however it will definitely be worth it!

I'll be praying for you.

Do you have questions about what you've seen/read? And if I can ask, what denomination is your girlfriend? - it might help me (and others) to explain things.

Hi Holden11,

Here's a thought...if you are only going through the motions of being a Christian, or feigning belief in God to be with a girl in this life, think how much better it will be if you actually took a leap of faith and become a real Christian - then you could spend eternity with her in the kingdom of heaven!

I think the most important relationship you can have is one with God. He loves you unconditionally, despite your imperfections, depsite everything! He loves you so much he wants to spend eternity with you.:D

But, because we have all sinned, we have fallen short of the benchmark set to gain entry into heaven. God is perfect, but we are not - we are sinners. So Jesus is the one who bridges the gap between us and God. God has offered us entry into his kingdom with the gift of his son. All we have to do is accept the gift; accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour and welcome God into our life.

God's love for you is so great that he sent his son to die for you. He wants a personal relationship with you! Did you ever think that the Christian girl was perhaps sent by God as a way of getting you to take interest in him?

May God open the eyes of your heart to him...

My advice is don't change your religion to be with somebody else. Not because I have anything against Christianity, but because if you aren't truly wholehearted about your decision, you'll be sorry later. I'd try to have her accept you even though you are undecided about your beliefs.
