Agents?

Does anyone here know a good place to obtain a good listing of REPUTABLE literary agents?

Not the sort that advertise on matchbooks...

I have heard the advice to call the publishers of similar works and ask about the agents they prefer, but I have not been able to find anything similar in genre.

I'm looking especially for agents who handle syndicated columns, and, no, I don't mean the people online who say send us $250, we'll e-mail every publisher in the world for you.

There are certain books that list literary agents. I'm pretty sure that's what he said the other night--I sat in on a three hour class with a literary agent.

Syndicated columns? Call me an idiot, but what are they?

Writer's Digest publishes a yearly book of agents, just like they publish yearly listings of writer's and photographer's markets. Ask at your local bookstore. Your local library might have a copy, but they are usually at least a couple of years behind.

On second thought, I just did a Dogpile search. Try looking at this. You'll still have to buy it somewhere, though...

If Writer's Digest lets you down, you could always try the yellow pages,
Okay, the online yellow pages.
And when you find one you are interested in, get REFERENCES, and check them out personally. It's some extra work, but you'll be glad you did.
