  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What does God say about a big age difference between couples? I'm talking like 20 + years. What is the proper spiritual way to look at it? I know that the world thinks it's okay, but obviously that is not who's opinion I want. Is there anywhere in the Bible that addresses it or anything like that?

I can't think of anything biblical when it comes to this. I think there were instances in the Bible where older people married younger people but I can't think of who or where or if I'm just remembering incorrectly. Either way, from a biblical perspective, any relationship that is God honoring and Christ centered is a good one. Although from a practical standpoint, I think dating/marrying someone with that big of an age difference would be quite a challenge.

As far as I'm aware, the Bible doesn't specify age range limits. As long as you're both legally adults, and it doesn't bother you, I don't think age differences matter to God.
This.

Yeah at first I was thinking that it shouldn't be a problem with God either. But then I was like well if you're in your twenties and you marry someone who is 40 or even older, how are you going to have kids really? I know it's possible but unlikely. That just doesn't seem Biblical or right to me for some reason...

Like what would even be the point of getting married? One person is just starting their life and the other person is like done with their young adulthood basically.

Yeah but wasn't that when people lived to be like 500 years old?

no, that was after that. I forget how old Isaac was when he died, but I think it was either 90's or early 100's... *please correct me if I'm wrong*

You're right. Life span drastically shortened after the deluge.

I know a happily married couple where the wife is the age of the man's mother, about 20 years older. They're doing well, they have a son about 12 years old.

Edit: Oh, I also know a girl who recently got married to a guy her father's age, who has a daughter only 2 years younger than her... I'm not so sure how well that one is going to end up, I don't know the girl that well and I never met the husband or daughter.

The proper spiritual way to look at it (IMO) is to realize that God hasn't dictated every last little tiny itty bitty nuance of our lives... we actually get a little freedom. Actually, a lot of freedom.

This is just one of those things people get to choose for themselves. If it works... it works. *shrugs*

This.

I understand that it would be a challenge for someone in their 20s and someone in their 40s to marry. But it depends on the mindset of the individuals involved. A 20 year old and a 40 year old can have a lot in common, depending on life experience.

In the words of Aaliyah (the singer), "age aint nothing but a number". ;)
