  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Elder in Chirch keep saying that the hours following the Sabbath we should be savouring the Sabbath experience rather than rushing off to do other things, wanted to go do some work yesterday evening after Sabbath and a member came down on me hard for wanting to go at 7 pm when the sun set before 6

I don't think that people should be so hard on you. That's pretty legalistic. I don't think that we as Adventists should be as judgmental as we sometimes are of what people do on Sabbath since the Bible doesn't give us a comprehensive list of what things are acceptable or unacceptable to do on Sabbath. And they especially shouldn't pressure you to keep the Sabbath even after the Sabbath ends. That is definitely adding burdens to people's spiritual lives that the Bible doesn't require them to carry.

After the sabbath, my family usually rushes to the computer and the TV. But firstly we do a closing song and prayer. We try to all help each other wash up after that too.

Though it is honor the sabbath day, friday you prepare. After the Sabbath god dosn't care what you do, unless it's against him or bad for you. But working is only forbidden on sabbath, not after sundown, so you're fine in my opinion...

If Sabbaths ets at 6:00 p.m. then you can do whatever you like after that.

I can see to a certain extent his point of view. But once Sabbath is done then you can do what ever is necessary for you to do to engage in your work.

Totally uncalled for in what the Elder did to you.

key word here is "after" The Sabbath no longer exists. I put down on all my job applications that I will not work fridays after sunset, but will work Saturdays after sunset. So if the sunsets at 4 pm I can work all night, once time changes during the summer. Sun may set at 7 pm I work after 7 pm. That is in no way shape or form violating the Sabbath because I'm not working on the Sabbath.

I was always taught that we're supposed to guard the edges of the Sabbath, and to me that means that on Friday we should try our best to close out our regular life stuff at least one half hour before the sun sets and try to have a bible reading, a devotional, singing, and prayer as the sun sets. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't often turn out that way, but I wish it would. It just seems more respectful of God and His wishes.

On Sabbath, if you plan to start work right at sunset, how can you do that without starting to prepare on the Sabbath? I mean, you'd have to put on your workclothes and head out to the job before Sabbath ends and do any other thing that you'd need to do before you start work and that would all happen on the Sabbath. Just a thought...

But, with that in mind, I don't agree with the Elder's statement that you should spend the hours after sunset just savouring the Sabbath. That's unrealistic and too much of a burden. I don't really know how much time you need to guard the edges of the Sabbath, but I wouldn't think it would be hours.

.

I see your point, but i said after sunset. Noone can start working exactly at sunset without already being at work.

Bondage...bondage....bondage. We are not to be in bondage to the Sabbath.

My family usually has at least a prayer when the sun sets, and then we gradually go back to weekly life...
I don't agree that there should be restrictions on the hours after Sabbath

I don't agree that we should have so many restriction during the Sabbath.

What did Jesus say concerning the Sabbath?

Chapter 12

At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.
2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;
4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.
9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:
10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.
11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? 12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

Jesus shows the Sabbath is a blessing and not a burden. I know some Adventist that wont even let their children play in their own back yards on the Sabbath. One guy who has high blood sugar said he did not have time to cook a Sabbath meal and that he was considering going to the Golden Coral after church, but he thought this would be a problem with his wife. These are the sort of things that Jesus freed us from...the law of the old covanant

you mentioned the word "we" by now you shouls know I hate generalizations like that. I Live the Sabbath by the Bible standerds. I know there are people that take it to far and if so, better to take it to far, then not far enough!

Those parents that don't let their kids play outside are trying to teach them about "resting on the Sabbath"

These examples you have given aren't really restrictions, they are opinions of people and their views on the Sabbath. Like I said better to take it too far then not far enough.
