• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What does your religion offer after your death?

And please only reply if you believe in after death, I do not want the thread derailed on whether there is after life or not; but just what is your final outcome according to your religion?

Cheers.

From the Baha'i Writings

A friend asked:

"How should one look forward to death?"

'Abdu'l-Bahá answered:

"How does one look forward to the goal of any journey? With hope and with expectation. It is even so with the end of this earthly journey. In the next world, man will find himself freed from many of the disabilities under which he now suffers.

"Those who have passed on through death, have a sphere of their own. It is not removed from ours; their work, the work of the Kingdom, is ours; but it is sanctified from what we call `time and place.'

Time with us is measured by the sun. When there is no more sunrise, and no more sunset, that kind of time does not exist for man. Those who have ascended have different attributes from those who are still on earth, yet there is no real separation."

This is what the Almighty God says in His Book:

Surah Al-Mulk

1. Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion, and He is Able to do all things.

2. Who has created death and life, that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving;

3. Who has created the seven heavens one above another, you can see no fault in the creations of the Most Beneficent. Then look again: "Can you see any rifts?"

4. Then look again and yet again, your sight will return to you in a state of humiliation and worn out.

5. And indeed We have adorned the nearest heaven with lamps, and We have made such lamps (as) missiles to drive away the Shayâtin (devils), and have prepared for them the torment of the blazing Fire.

6. And for those who disbelieve in their Lord (Allâh) is the torment of Hell, and worst indeed is that destination.

7. When they are cast therein, they will hear the (terrible) drawing in of its breath as it blazes forth.

8. It almost bursts up with fury. Every time a group is cast therein, its keeper will ask: "Did no warner come to you?"

9. They will say: "Yes indeed; a warner did come to us, but we belied him and said: 'Allâh never sent down anything (of revelation), you are only in great error.'"

10. And they will say: "Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we would not have been among the dwellers of the blazing Fire!"

11. Then they will confess their sin. So, away with the dwellers of the blazing Fire.

12. Verily! Those who fear their Lord unseen (i.e. they do not see Him, nor His Punishment in the Hereafter, etc.), theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward (i.e. Paradise).

There is not a lot of information given in the Hebrew bible about what happens after death, so there are
some variations in belief.
From my perspective, we go to a place
similar to the Christian purgotory for no more than
12 months where our soul is cleansed and we
continue on to olam haba.
If a soul is so evil it does not merit eternal life, it
simply ceases to exist.
All righteous people, no matter what faith, will
merit this future life.

Well, Wicca talks of Summerland and reincarnation... Summerland is where the soul goes to rest and recharge after death, before being reborn on earth. There is a time between death and Summerland (according to many traditions) where there is a sort of "review of your life" where you investigate your actions through your life, so your soul can learn from them.

Eventually, after your soul has done all that it is destined to do, your soul moves on again... Though where and what it does is debated from tradition to tradition.

I personally don't believe in reincarnation at all, so that's where Wiccan theology and mine differ greatly.

So then your soul is never at rest, always being reincarnated into various perpetual states, but never arriving at a final destination?

So what is paradise?
And what number of heaven does it fall under? Is it number one or number seven?
What are the seven heavens, is this like purgatory?

My religion says that the sum of everything that exists doesn't change, so us as individuals being tiny parts of existence, will fit into the whole thing when our bodies die. What that means practically, wether reincarnation or something else, I don't know.
That is usually how I answer. Just live your life in peace, love and compassion and that will be what paradise will be like.
Paul appears to also not know what lies beyong our physical death and it appears the Prophets, Him and Jesus weren't clear about it.

I suppose it can be akin to a child waking up on Christmas morning wondering what Santa had left them.

1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written: "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him." [Isaiah 64:4]

I really don't think it's something we should worry about or even look forward to. I don't see that we're here to achieve anything individual, ie cleanse our soul or anything like that. Whatever purpose living things serve in the frame of existence, is a collective one, something for all living things to achieve together. So heaven, hell, all these ficticious ideas are meaningless to me. Just live a good , moral life like you say, and that contributes to said purpose. And if I'm wrong and god is sitting there watching over us then if you've led a good life, you'll be in his good books anyway. Assuming god is 'good' anyway.

in islam when you die your soul sleep untill the resurrection day and after the judgment every one, except a minority, enters hell firstly suffer for their unforgiven crimes then the believers get out for heaven where dis-believers go on to stay in hell...there are several levels of hell and heaven for both the punishment and favour will be just under the forgiveness of Allah who is the only Master of the judgment day...

Salaam Anatolian, it would appear that the Muslim's paradise is a sensual paradise. Infact similar to how people behave here on earth, in Western countries. It is full of food, wine (which somehow your religion forbids while on earth, but not in heaven), and full of woman (houris) but not natural women. Is it true that there is nothing for Muslim women when they go to paradise?

Hail and Greetings

My religion emphasizes the here and now, but I believe that after death you are reborn to learn more about life / fulfill your destiny.

I personally hope that I am reincarnated. I wish to learn more about how to love and care for others. I would love to have a family and belong somewhere. It's one of the reasons why I joined Asatru in the first place.

Happy New Year,

Babochka

What does your religion offer after your death?

Something; what exactly, good question. So many options...

Truly proverbial within Asatru afterlife concepts is, of course, Valhalla - the hall of Odin where his Valkyries gather the fallen heroes to train them for the final battle at Ragnarok. The "simple" point of view states that all who don't go to Valhalla go to Hel (the original, no spelling error).
But it's not incompatible with Asatru lore to assume that for the non-warriors plenty other options exist - like being invited to the hall of one of the other deities (Folkwang would be pleasant I guess... you know who Freya is in our pantheon, don't you? :D), reincarnation, becoming a guardian spirit for your still-living loved ones, whatever. Who knows the options of the High Gods? ;)

And to be fair, there are two stanzas in the Poetic Edda which hint at a place of punishment for the worst of the worst (namely liars, adulterers and murderers)... but these may be just assimilations of the christian hell concept into Asatru, from the times of peaceful coexistence.
