  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I hadn't heard of them, so I looked them up on YouTube just now, lol. It's the type of music I have to be in the right mood to enjoy. Not saying it's bad or that I didn't like it at all. Just that I'm not in the mood for it at the moment. It was kinda catchy, though.

What kind of secular music do you enjoy most,MomOf2nApril. The music from Arcade Fire comes in a huge variety. They kinda have there own unique blend....much like Dylan. I remember reading years ago one man's take on Dylan. "Every rock generalization should begin with 'Except for Dylan' ". Arcade Fire is similar in that respect.

At the moment? I've been into hard rock/metal.

I like the song "Intervention" quite a bit. Lyrically it's hard to tell exactly where they're coming from (I know Win Butler comes from a Mormon background if I remember correctly) but I like that the song challenges some of the corruption and pretenses that some churches put on. That seemed to be a recurring theme on Neon Bible, one of both looking for truth and being suspicious of religion at the same time.

One thing I would like to see is more humor and cheer injected into their music. Sometimes I do feel that come off as too serious and static with their image. Even the greats like U2, Radiohead, and The Police have their share of comical and lighthearted moments.

"Serious" is the response I get a lot of the time when I send links to people. Personally,I like how intense Win is with vocals, but I know what you mean. From the very start of their relationship Win and Régine have been in lockstep about writing REAL songs....songs that matter and I find that incredibly appealing. Again,I often compare them to Dylan and to tell you the truth I think they are the most significant musical force to come along since Dylan. I sure hope their relationship holds together because I think without each other the music of both would suffer a lot.
By the way,I have 3 kids from early 30s to mid 40s and they all despise AF and have stopped even responding to my "obsession" . Sooner or later they will come around. It took me over 20 years to make a Dylan fan of my son. Prior to AF we pretty much shared the same musical preferences . That is,like I said,BEFORE AF. And I'd love to see them collaborate with Dylan on something.
