I have an embarrassing question and just so unsure where I stand with god. I struggle with sin ( or 1 particular sin) in my life I have repented but end up doing it over and over again. I said something thinking it would scare me enough to never ever do and yes it was a stupid thing to do/say but I told god if I do it again he was to send me to hell. I'm terrified he will and it eats me up daily

God knows we are always tending to act in the flesh, so He can overlook that; but the real issue is whether one receives or rejects His "...beloved Son" ---the Lord Jesus Christ. Just make sure you have Him in your heart as Savior and Lord of your life (and best Friend). Its all about that personal relationship with the Savior. Read John 1; John 3; John 14, and ask God to teach you.

Would you mind sharing what exactly this "sin" is?

My advice is to read "God is not angry at you" by Joyce Myer. It is a great book and since I read it I do not see God as an angry God, but a very loving God.

Here is a link for more information on the book.

God is loving and merciful, but a God of justice, righteousness, & hates evil. Just don't be a part of evil, but come to the Savior --the Lord Jesus, while there is time. One may not be able to come tomorrow, for life is brief: "life at best is very brief, like the falling of a leave, like the binding of a sheaf --be in time", the song writer has said (note John 3).

As one who has had the same sort of issue, of insoluble sin, I have a few ideas.
It became apparent to me that the sin was, in and of itself not the problem. The problem was, and is something deeper. After 30 or so years it appears the issue is more a psychological one, than a sin. As I have got to grips with my thinking, I have found that the sin repetition is diminishing to very low levels now.
When I first became a Christ follower, such sins were considered to be signals of a lack of repentance.
Failing that it was a demonic problem, possibly needing repentance and deliverance.
then, it was possibly just too hard for the powers that were go deal with it with God.
After all that, a new pastor and church, and he, after prayer said go see a doctor, get some unsad pills. ( happy pills may give the wrong impression?) That was the beginning of my healing, and as I have said, has lead to the psych stuff, which to get onside with the more religious is,
Hope my ramblings help? the renewal of my mind.

I too have struggled and still struggle with sin. I think any Christian who says they don't is either lying or doesn't realize they are sinning 'cause no one is perfect.

I used to struggle with smoking for years. When I first became a Christian I quit smoking because I thought that's what I should do, but I really wasn't ready yet. I started smoking again, quit again, started smoking again etc.

The last time I started smoking again I felt really down, and scared that God would turn his back on me. I'll never forget standing in the kitchen wondering if I was still saved and God spoke to my heart very clearly. He said "Be assured of your salvation." I was so thankful, as while other Christians where judging me for smoking, God was just sitting back loving me through it.

I cried out to God and asked him why I couldn't quit smoking. Then I was watching Joyce Meyer one day when she was talking about building up strength and exercise, and in my imagination I saw a person trying to do a bicep curl. I realized that I was trying to lift a weight I wasn't strong enough for.

So how do you get strong enough? Growth is something that occurs over time. A plant can't force itself to grow any faster, but you can water it and feed it. You can spend time in God's presence and in his word and your spiritual muscle will build up strength and before you know it you would have conquered the sin without even trying!

I haven't smoked for 6 years. Praise God!

Bless you!

@bellethiel

Do you really know that your 'sin' is really a sin? Is it described that way in the bible or do you just think that it might be a sin because your parents and your social environment told you it is? Not every act or behaviour is a sin just because we think it is. Even shame or embarrassment isn't always a good sign to be sure that a particular act is a sin. Maybe you need professional advice by a psychologist instead of asking us laymen. And so long we don't know what kind of sin we are talking here about we can't really help you but of course you don't have to tell it.

What sends people to Hell is unbelief in Jesus. This is the sin the world is convicted of, John 16:9.

If you continue to believe on Jesus then you will be with God in Heaven.

As for our failings in behavior, this is not sin that Christians can be condemned for. None of us is perfect in behavior. I suggest you don't condemn yourself for your failings. That's exactly what the devil wants us to do.

BTW, many Christians misunderstand sin anyway.

God gives us definitions of sin in the Bible. Sadly, most Christians do not even use God's definitions of sin, thus they often misunderstand scripture.

For example, sin is defined as:

Unrighteousness, 1John 5:17

Transgression of the law,1John 3:4

Neither of these sins apply to Christians. In other words Satan, the accuser, cannot charge us with these sins.

Why?

Christians are righteous as our faith is counted for righteousness.
Rom 4:5
But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness,
Hence we cannot be charged with the sin of unrighteousness.

Regarding the law, whatever the law says it says to those under it, Rom 3:19.

But Christians are not under the law according to God's word (Rom 8:2, Rom 10:4, Gal 3:25, Gal 5:18, 1Tim 1:9).

Hence we cannot be charged with the sin of transgression of the law.

And this is all confirmed in scripture.

Rom 8:33
Who shall lay ANY THING (this includes sin) to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.

1John 3:9
Whoever has been born of God does NOT sin, for His seed (Christ ) remains in him; and he CANNOT sin, because he has been born of God.

1Pet 4:1
Therefore, since Christ suffered (crucified) for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind (our old man crucified with him, Rom 6:6), for he who has suffered in the flesh (Rom 6:6) has CEASED from sin,

Jesus truly set us free from sin, John 8:36.

A Christian's life is hid with Christ in God, Col 3:3.
That means that if you believe on Jesus then it's not the physical you God sees with all its failings and flaws. Instead it's Christ in you that God sees.

And Satan, the accuser, cannot charge you with sin because your life is hid in Christ and in Christ there is no sin, 1John 3:5.

Rev 12:9-11
So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death
.

Continue to believe on Jesus and then Satan, the accuser, cannot charge you with sin.

I might add though that Christians will not profit by doing wrong. None of us is perfect anyway, but God disciplines us when we do wrong. Consider King David who committed adultery and murder. God put away his sin, thus he did not have to face the death penalty under the law. But King David suffered consequences for the wrong he did.

Hope this helps.

Anyway, read God's word and don't let Satan rob you of what you have in Christ. Believe on Jesus and your faith is thus counted for righteous.

Glad you were able to quit! Not for busybodying reasons, but simply because it's better! :)
