Advice please

I am cleaning out my bookshelf of books that I don't want anymore and I come across a tarot deck I got back in my college 'heathen' days Never really believed in it, maybe used it one or two times but basically shelved it.

I was going to toss it but just for the heck of it I looked on ebay, found the set to be out of production and an auction for the same deck is going for around $50 (about double what I payed for them). The deck is in pristine condition and has the book and carrying case - they're based on Norse dieties/art work.

Now, should I sell them (thus putting a pagan device back out into the world) or toss 'em and lose that cash?

Good question - one I've wrestled with more than once. I finally decided that even though several books I've bought through the years might be worth a lot (one was 19th C on witchcraft) I actually threw them out! It was hard, but I have great peace about it.

Throwing out one deck is not going to make a difference. There are a million more like it.

I doubt the Creator of 100 million galaxies is too concerned about what you do with the deck.

Its your God given American right as a patriot to profit from it ..

You could go buy a big leather bible.

I'd definitely get rid of it. There may be more out there, but at least you won't be the contributor. When someone falls into it, at least you won't be held accountable for making cash on it.

I'd sell it. I strongly disapprove of this nonsensical attitude of 'we'd better destroy it or it might corrupt someone.' If someone is going to get their eternal soul corrupted by a deck of cards, I honestly wouldn't have much hope for them in the first place. It's like refusing to give someone a single french fry because you don't want to them to have a heart attack.

Moreover, you aren't culpable for the actions of others. And even furthermore, I don't understand the ridiculous belief that an item that is somehow related to a non-Christian belief structuce also contributes to non-Christian belief. The vast majority of people I know who own tarot cards have no religious interest in them whatsoever-- they are merely interesting toys/objects/collectibles. Are people somehow bad for enjoying Nordic mythology as just that, mythology? Sorry for the rant, but few things are more annoying than the 'burn it trash it hide it' attitude that some people develop in relation to opposing viewpoints-- if your ideology can't handle competition from a deck of cards, I'd advise you need to take a long, deep look at your priorities.

I agree with Havoc.

It always bugs me when I hear about Born again christians who throw out all their secular music (i know this is a bit different), and just destroy it or burn it. Hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of CDs destroyed. When they chould have done something that I think would be more christian, sell them and donate the money to charity or to the church or something. Destroying them seems fanatical and quite frankly self centered.

Destroying it wont keep someone from practicing tarrot, we are in the 21st century where mass production is common, its not like you would be truly contributing to anything. I mean, oh no, intead of there being a million tarrot decks out there, there are a million and One, the world will be destroy, AHHHHH.

However,

$50= 2 good meals a day for 5 days for a homeless person. Even more at a homeless shelter as they can stretch money further than most. $50 can make a huge difference is someones life.

Bookburning makes me angry. Torched or trashed, those tomes are now gone forever.

It was hard, but I have great peace about it.

I don't think I will ever understand any mentality that embraces the destruction of information.

Speaking of book burning, it would be of interest to point out that many christian groups that burn books, also burn bibles. Just to point out the company you are in when you want to burn or destroy books.

If you really think a deck of cards is going to result in a measurable detriment to society, then destroy them. But I haven't seen one shred of evidence that is the case.

LOL! I didn't burn them, I threw them in the trash.

I used to feel that way also; all books, any book should be saved. You should see me during big pickup weeks here at the shore salvaging boxes of books that are being thrown out. I am in hog heaven. I still do it - rummage through the boxes and donate most of the remainder to the library or thrift shop.

You may be interested to know that the majority of books I've thrown out were Liberal Christian, sort of spiritual junk books, etc. I used the witchcraft book as my example, because that's one that would have been worth money.

Honestly, they are really attractive cards, done in an norse/anglo saxon style - weaved borders, decent art. I was just thinking of hocking them and the drawbacks since they are supposedly a divination tool.

I have different priorities.

The last group that made the news by burning Harry Potter books, also burned any non KJV bibles. Not old ones, new ones. They burned them because they believe any non KJV bible is the work of satan and should be destroyed in flames.

I would have loved it! I love old books, especialy odd ones that are rarely saved, it would have made great reading!

That was a sad and pointless destruction of an item that would have helped people learn and understand our past and other religions. Just think of the good that could of come if some Christian could have actualy used that for study on witchcraft rather than having to rely on Bob Larson and his ilks trash.

Book burning is bad, I don't care what the book is about! If you didn't want it to be used as a spell book again, I'm sure there are some fine bible schools or ministries that would have given their eyeteeth for such an item, not to mention people like me who just love the odd info and history of such books or even a secular school that might just have some use for it in their history archives. You may have just tossed out the key that would have let someone reach a witch and pull them from the craft.

What does the deck look like, sounds vaugly like a deck a friend of mine had and I would love to get for the artwork. Let me know when it goes to ebay so I can get a look at it.
