I want to take a photo of a candle burning and have the lights off in the room so the rest of the photo will be black. Can I take the photo without using a flash?

No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am not familiar with your camera, but yes I would take it without the flash. For me, I'd have to bracket shoot it which would also include a tripod to keep the shutter open at various lengths of time.
Keep in mind I'm no expert.

Thanks for the advice. I guess the best thing to do is try it with different settings to see what works.

Oh definitely! I meter bracket all the time to help the learning curve (or maybe not since I still do it???
).
Anyway, try it with the flash and without. If you can play around see what happens if you can get a flashlight on it while the lights are off. I did that once with a rose. The background was more dark gray than black though.

I've heard of a minolta, but not aware of too many people who actually have them. and I think my father has one...but goodness..he rarely uses it. Good luck with your picture and remember to post them up!

If you use the flash, then you`ll lose the blackness of the background, ideally use a tripod and a slow shutter speed, ultimatly I guess its a case of trial and error, is the dynax 5 digitalif so then all the experimental shots will be ok, if not then I would surgest using someones digital camera to get the aperture and shutter speeds and then take a few photo`s around that, that way you will cut down on cost.
