Anybody got advice on a calm cat, that is content on it's own, likes to cuddle, is not to scared, is a bit curious on other animals perhaps. In the countryside, I think a cat could have a good time here. Big territory, many birds and mice to hunt. And perhaps it could chase away some birds that are getting way too many and too close. They keep flying into the windows, like 5 birds a day smacking into the windows. Kamikazebirds. I must stop that animaltragedy. The cat should also have personality and like to play.

Well I'm no expert but I had a maincoon cat and lived at the top of a mountain in the redwoods and it did great. It was great at catching rats and mice and birds indoors and outdoors. So long as you don't plan on moving like I had to I recommend it just give it love and attention and you're good

Never heard of it, sounds expencive. I am getting one for free I think. No speciality cat. Just a cat that needs a home. After each summer, people have dumped cats all over the place when going on vacation, so the animal shelters should be at full capacity. Or find one that is advertised in the paper, that looks cute, but cannot cost too much, I am quite poor. So it is enough with the 200 dollars it might cost to get it vaccinated and checked by the vet.

I was asking for recommendations, I might pay some for a cat, but not like 500 dollars for special breeds. I never heard of the type you mention, so think it is an exotic one here. I am from europe, limited market. I live in the country, going to a small city of 20 000 people, so I cannot pick and choose totally. Exotic cats are typically sold here, and costs a lot. On the drive I have an area of like 25 000 to look for a cat, or possibly a dog. I could perhaps ask some people to pick one up in a bigger city. Thanks for the tip, I have noted it, and will look for it, sounded like a great cat for a place like this, and to fix the birdissue.

Maybe look into the norwegian forest cat. It even has the name of your country in the name, so it shouldn't be exotic.

Otherwise, if you don't want or can't go for specific breeds, visit your local animal shelter and get to know the cats on an individual basis.

Just be aware that cats cost money even after acquiring them. There's the food, toys, the vet, and of course they might damage things that you need to replace.

Yes, that type is on the top of my list. Very calm, independent, cuddly, and has personality. And my granny had such a cat, it was a good cat. I now live in that very house, and there should be another one now. Going to the shelter, but it is a 3 hour drive, and I think I might have to get an appointment nowadays. Getting some info first, so I pick the right cat, have not had a cat for over 20 years. Which mysteriously died from the catplague while I was abroad for three months. Bit suspicious about that story, when my non-cat parents catsat for me. An amazing little cat, catched at least one mouse every single day.

Some mail order catalogs sell stickers to put on windows (indoors) so those Kamakazes will not fly into windows.

Maybe you should call the shelter. They're not only bound to know a lot about cats in general, but on the cats they have as well. They can probably tell you if the cat you are searching might be among the ones they have.

I lived in an apt complex where a woman owned three cats. They urinated on the carpet until the stench went into the hall. She was evicted. They tore out the carpet and billed her damages. A cat will use a litter box unless it is too dirty.

That is perhaps a solution. I suspect it is the bigger birds living in the barn, that hunts the smaller ones living under the roof in the house. And they are forced to divert and that is why they smash into the house all the time.

There is at least 6 birdnests on the front and one shortside. And god knows how many bigbirds in the old barn. And also have several nests in the building behind my picture, which is a restaured pantrybuilding that is older than the black plague. And nest after nest in the trees around. So I really do need a cat or a barking dog.

Yes, I will do that. I just saw something about cats, and I started browsing the pet thread here reading peoples cat threads. So I decided that I should ask and get some info first. There was a dog visiting me several times a day for 2 weeks, and I kind of miss that, in addition to the birdissue. Cannot get the cat until the end of the month, because I cannot leave a kitten alone overnight. Cannot have my dad watch it, he does not like cats, so not good for the cat.

I do not believe in letting cats go out of the house. If you plan to let the cat outside then I would say reconsider. Not only would the cat kill birds and wildlife there, but predators may kill the cat. I have known of cats taken by eagles and hawks and killed by mountain lion, bear and coyotes where I live. That said, some good breeds that are friendly and like being with you would include Maine coon and Rag doll. But a good way to find a good friendly cat is to go to the local shelter and talk to them there. Adopt an adult cat because they have their personality and the shelter will know which is friendly and holds the traits you want. If you get a kitten, you have no clue what it will be like as an adult, plus kittens are a lot more wild and will have at your furniture and drapes. ;)

Consider: He's living in the countryside in norway.

And yes, they might get killed or hurt outside, or get lost or stolen.

But every owner needs to decide for himself if those risks weigh heavier than the happyness of their cat.

That was the main reason. I live in the countryside in Montana and watch people let cats be outdoors and they are killed by the animals I noted AND they also mate and make colonies of cats that no one cares for. So I gave him my opinion.

Cats decide for themselves, they are freespirited, I love that about cats. They just do as they please, and they tell you what they want and demand, and get butthurt if they do not get it, and sulk. The cats potensial must not be stiffled, so the cat must go outside, and mostly be outside. I expect it to knock on the window when it wants to come inside. No predators here. The wolf is extinct in my area. Occational badgers once a year. Other than that, I had a moose on a field next to my yard a month ago, but hardly think they are dangerous for cats. We have sheepfarmers here, so they kind of make sure that predators attacking sheep, gets shot, so very safe. The eagles may be in the mountains, but not lower down in the valley. No worries.

That is good advice about the shelter, and possibly an adult cat. That is perhaps what Jesus would do if he got a cat, take the adult one, that nobody picks. I do not care about the furniture being messed up. Whatver the cat wants, I will just have to store away the nicer furniture then. And I expect the cat to claw at the TV stand that the last cat used as scratching stick. A cat got to do what a cat got to do.

Norway doesn't have many animals that would hunt cats.

Make sure to talk with your local hunters. The biggest danger for your cat might come from them if they think your cat is poaching.

It is not like that here. People do not shoot cats, and no such my property stuff. And the hunt is only for moose and caraboo, and some deer. Just seasonal for like a month, and that is soon, so it will be little at that time, and be indoor cat. Because there are theese birds that might attack a cat on it's own.
