  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I found a potential job opportunity. There's a guy on Craigslist who is a subcontractor with the department of corrections or something like that. He owns a house and he's working on turning it into a halfway house for prisoners. He's looking for someone to stay in the house and keep an eye on them, make sure they abide by their curfew, etc. The perks are: free room and board. $200 a month on of top of free room and board. The downside, of course, is living with six criminals.

I don't know anything about the house yet, but it is in Flint. It may be a large house with a bunch of bedrooms or we're all bunking together lol, which I'm not up for doing.

What would you do??

Find out if the prisoners are on parole.

If the prisoners are on parole and then it's more likely that they'll behave (or else be sent back to prison).

Can you find out if the halfway house is recovery-based for drug offenses/abuse, sex crimes, or transitional for long-term prisoners (probably felonies and/or capital crimes)?

I just Googled halfway houses in Michigan (Dept. of Corrections) and there are hardly any:

A list of halfway houses - List of U.S. Halfway Houses by State

An article from 1999 about how Michigan is shutting down halfway houses: Halfway Houses Are Casualties of a Michigan Sentencing Law - NYTimes.com. It's from 1999, but this sounds like a scam. OP could end up in a prostitution ring or drug involvement.....
Wow thanks for checking that out for me.

And thank the rest of you for your advice. I'll definitely stay away.

How is $200 a month plus room and board (since it's Flint, I'm going to guess that it comes to less than $1000 a month total) worth living with six criminals? Do you know how much prison guards are paid?

Also, Craigslist job offers are not for the faint of heart, freelance anything is a roll of the dice. At least visible companies are afraid to overtly defraud you of your wages because they know the government is watching them. Individual clients, not so much. Best way to do freelance is to have a business model like the Ghostbusters - if the client doesn't pay, they just put it back.

For $200 (considering free room and board) = $1000.
I'd pray, but you're dealing with criminals. Unless you have that kind of background - I'd be wary.
PS. Most people would commit crimes jailworthy if pushed. How many people abort or cheat and ruin their kids lives. Crime is relative. How many take risks while driving (or household risks.)
How many sell their kids - most in this society.
If everyone knew everything about other people - how many of us would really deserve to live?

This man might be just good hearted. Ex-cons however...... (do unto others)
