  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am new to cross referencing the Scriptures so any advice on this is welcome.
I have a couple of translation which provide a handful of verses for each of their topical bible studies so I usually do my own thing on the website Bible Hub that lets you see a few more cross references and in 20-25 translations at a time which is interesting.

My point for posting is this:
Is it best to cross reference every verse of a book?
Just key verses or ones that I do not find straight forward to understand?
Is it absolutely necessary to be very familiar with a book before cross referencing outside of it?

It is a shame that Bible Hub does not cross reference whole chapters but I guess that is asking for to much convenience! I am currently cross referencing my way through Revelation and I am enjoying the challenge of it.

Thank you in advance.

There's some great chain-reference bibles that will topically guide. Another way without a chain reference bible is to word study with a bible and concordence. I like to have bookform to study the progression of the word and learn the symbols that the bible surrounds it with.

I would stick with topics that interest you.

Hi Aimz, I'm with Cassie about the Chain-Reference Bibles. The Thompson Chain-Reference Bible's system is w/o equal. I am VERY blessed to have access to all kinds of study tools (commentaries, word studies, lexicons, etc.) these days, but the chain reference is what I used to study the Bible with in the past when I didn't have all these tools, but I still use it today for certain types of studies, particularly when I want to really dig in. For instance, if you want to find out for yourself why the church holds to the doctrine of the Trinity and find all the Biblical reasons why they do/reasons why it was created in the first place, the Thompson Chain-Reference is the tool you need. In fact, if I had to give up all but one of my Bible study tools, my Thompson Chain-Reference Bible would be the one I would keep.

Kirkbride Bible- Thompson® Chain-Reference® Bibles

Yours and His,
David

I used to use a "Young's Analytical Concordance with Hebrew and Greek Lexicons" which I came across at a thrift store. It was a great and well used tool. Now, I use Bible Gateway. It has just about every translation you could imagine at the click of your mouse. I like the ESV version on there as at the click of a letter it takes you to all other relevant scriptures, both Old and New Testament. There is also "Mounce's Reverse Interlinear Greek New Testament" that you can see every word in the Greek, its meaning and how it is used/translated in other scripture verses.

I have several study Bibles that have some cross references in them. When I read through Scripture I will sometimes note if it sounds like or relates to another passage that I can think of, but I don't go to a lot of extra trouble. If it pops out, I write it down.

I have used both Strong's & Young's Concordances, and the Oxford English Dictionary (for its word history and origins). On the www, I have found both Biblehub & Bible Gateway useful, especially the Greek-English interlinear texts.

The idea of chain referencing (used in printed Bibles to save space), is that you get pointed to one verse, which points you to the next one, etc., etc.

It is a shame that Bible Hub does not cross reference whole chapters

For "big picture" stuff, you need a good commentary or a good study Bible. I would recommend the ESV Study Bible.
