Advent Mass

Hey All!

I just luuuv this Advent season! We even had a few flakes of snow this morning!
So happy!

But the last two Sundays, I noticed that we do not sing the Gloria in Mass anymore. Is this a seasonal thing? Is it only sang in ordinary time?

We said (not sung) it yesterday. If the organist had been there, I imagine we would have sung it.

Hmm, strange that for two Sunday's (In different parishes) we didn't.

Maybe it's a Canadian thing?

The Gloria is never sung at Masses with purple vestments, in either rite, nor at a Mass for the Dead, so during Advent, Septuagesima (in the 1962 rite), Lent, and on vigils, it is omitted.

Similarly, "Alleluia" is never said from Septuagesima Sunday (or Ash Wednesday) until Holy Saturday in either the Mass or the Office. It is sometimes replaced with Laus tibi, Domine, Rex aeternae gloriae, "Praise to you, O Lord, King of eternal glory", including before the Gospel in the new Mass.

These seasons are times of penance, and both the Gloria and "alleluia", as signs of rejoicing, aren't really appropriate for the season. It's really wonderful, though, at the Easter Vigil, when Gloria in excelsis Deo is heard again after so many weeks without it.

It is sung, though, at Mass on Maundy Thursday.

Actually, the Gloria is not sung during Lent or Advent. Both are penitential seasons but in celebration and preparation of different things (and different levels of penitence).
