The music ministry for the Mass at which I serve consists of a song leader plus 3 vocalists; Instrumentation includes piano, acoustic guitar, trumpet or cornet, and double bass or electric bass. The choice of basses depends on weather conditions (The double bass never goes out in wet, cold, icy, or windy weather) and on getting someone to haul it in and out for me.

I just can't get into "O Come, O Come Emmanuel". It depresses me every time. I know it's supposed to be a plaintive cry for the coming of the Messiah, as experienced by the Jewish people, but it just drags me down when I hear it.

I told a former pastor that if it had a different tune, it would be easier to take. He asked what I would suggest, and I began to sing it to the tune of the Air Force Song ("Off we go, into the wild blue yonder....") He laughed and shook his head.

Does the accompaniment or chant vs metric song matter? Is it less depressing as an unaccompanied chant than it is as an accompanied metric song?
