  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

One week from today is Bastille Day. Celebrated in France as the beginning of their revolution against the monarchy. I know the French military is considered a joke, but it's unlikely we would have won our independence as soon as we did without the help of Lafayette, and Rochambeau, and the 12,000 French soldiers who fought with the Continental Army. Less well known is that a fleet of French warships and 32,000 French sailors also served. It can be said that the real hero of Yorktown was French Admiral deGrasse. His defeat of the Royal Navy in Baltimore prevented the evacuation of British troops on the Yorktown peninsula. Which led to Cornwallis's surrender, and the end of the Revolutionary War in our favor. The forces led by French pirate and privateer Jean Lafitte helped Andrew Jackson win the Battle of New Orleans in 1814. And there's a speculative what-if relating to the War of 1812. According to legend, Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, was offered command of the British army sent to fight the young United States. Wellington is probably the most capable British military leader in history. But this was also the time when Napoleon was making trouble in Europe. And Wellington chose to go after Napoleon, who was the bigger threat. If this story is true, then France helped us out again by distracting Britain's most skilled military commander. We might have lost the 1812 war and become a British colony again if Wellington was leading an army against us. And let's not forget that the French also gave us the Statue of Liberty. And champagne.

It's true that we did repay our debt many times over by ridding France of the Nazis in WW2. But still...Vive la France!

And in 1813 Col. Charles de Salaberry led a force of 1500 French Canadian militia (no redcoats at all) against a vastly superior American army at the Battle of Chateauguay to defeat yet again another American attempt to invade Canada.

They defeated no one; the superior American forces were leaving Canada once and for all after seeing the disaster of Socialist Healthcare. That and they had some enemy Airfields around Baltimore that they needed to capture to stop the British airstrikes against Washington D.C.. do they even teach history in Canada?

If I remember correctly they only withdrew after securing many wagon loads of Canadian bacon.

Nope! More falsehoods from history. What the victorious and heroic US Troops took back were the remains of fine Made in the USA Virginia Ham that the dastardly Canadian’s and their British enablers stole on a raiding party. On getting wind that the superior American forces of Truth, Justice and Freedom were heading up North to punish these ragtag Francophiles of the weak and sad British Empire, they immediately began to slice these fine American made hams and used a biscuit cutter to cut these sliced hams into little circles of useless nothingness. After defeating these French speaking British wannabe surrender monkeys, they searched for the delicious hams that were taken from their rightful owners. All these illiterate Canadians could say was “No, No, Canadian Bacon, Eh?” this was due to the fact that the Canadian were all drunk off of fine Vermont maple Syrup. Upon taking the remains of the mangled hams back to their Native Land and returning the scraps to the rightful owners, the only use they could find was for a topping for pineapple pizza.

Hmm. I guess history is always more complex than the simple Canadian bacon stories we were taught in school.

Hence the need to invade the Hawaiian Islands to enslave the natives to work in the pineapple fields not realizing that Hawaiian style pizza was a Canadian invention all along.

And that is how Hawaii got its flag, by combining the Canadian Flag with the Canadian Naval Ensign and the white flag of surrender. History is such a good thing.
