• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

i have had it up to here with hearing that ADD is a disease. people don't realize that people with ADD share the same characteristics that Jesus had.

there are many things about ADD that society is EXTREMELY ignorant about. becuase of my ADD i am SO connected to my intuitive mind, thus, making me creative, open-minded, idealistic, etc., and i'm ALWAYS thinking about God in my head.

and i'm really open minded about morality.. i dont jump to conclusons based on mere "hunch"

I have ADD and i think it's the coolest thing in the world. Sure sometimes it makes things hard but it's fun. I'm almost always entertained. I do think that i'm lucky to have it. To always want to be doing something, usually bouncing off the walls with randomness. Medication can be a downer though but i guess it does have a purpose. Meh. YAY ADD!!!!!!

My son, now 12 has ADHD/ADD, I'm not sure if it's inherited or just something he aquired, his older brother supposedly has it,

I know he's having a hard time in school, mostly because he hates homework! And except for changing his classes a million times, the've done nothing to help him.

He's been on 3 different meds, 1 made him throw up and act like a zombie, when he's off it he can be hyper and drive us crazy or he is quiet, so it makes me wonder if he needs the meds.

I haven't found his ADHD a blessing or cool, I'm hoping he'll out grow it and soon! ~LOL~

It is speculated that ADD was a genetic advantage at some point, producing someone better suited to hunt game. Unfortunately modern society has nullified the advantages of many of those traits..

I have ADD/I and take methylphenidate for it; there are some times that no medication is better, and things it is useful for.

I agree. I have adult ADHD and although it can be a major pain while trying to do home work (or looking smooth for the ladies ), I like the fact that I have it.

I have so many interests in life, and I love to learn. My mind is always thinking about something, its always busy.

Just dont ask me to do stuff I dont want to do.

I was one of the ones back in the good old days, when ADD wasnt really well known. I think its massivly over diagnosed these days, but looking back as an adult i think i was diagnosed correctly.

great thread. i was offended when i saw ADD in the Recovery section. i think i've grown out of a lot of the ADD traits, but some traits still remain. i think having ADD helped make me the person i am today and the shear amount of mental energy i had i think might have helped me question my existance and lead me to God.

We are hunters in a farmers world. People who have ADD dont have a problem, its everyone else around them that has the problem :p

ADHD is not something that they grow out of, it is a life time illness or affliction whichever way you want to look at it. My son was diagnosed at age 5 and he is 35 now and still has ADHD/ADD. He also has trouble with his meds., but without them he bounces off the walls and looks for street drugs to compensate. Not trying to be harsh, just trying to forewarn you. My prayers are with you.

They may not completely grow out of it but my experience with my son who is now 19 is that his symptoms are much milder than they were when he was in elementary school.

there's a lot of evidence and expert oppinion that says that a the bulk of people who experience ADD as a child grow out of the symptoms. I've grown out of a lot of mine. Prehaps they dont grow out of them, they mearly learn to focus and control them and some learn how to focus them more effectvly that others which gives the illusion that some people 'grow out of it' and some dont.

I'm glad for natural remedies.....the prescription ones with their side effects are awful.

The only thing I don't like about ADD, is getting off task.
isn't it a fact that a natural product has to be put in pill form therefore taking away from it the fact that we didnt go out on all fours and eat it. Anyways can we have more insight into this please and ooh ooh what was this topic about again???

Jon,

I used to own a health food store, so I have a little bit of knowledge on how some of these "pills" are put together. Herbs are dried and put in a gelatin capsule. That is a far cry from what drug manufacturers do with their creations. Take valium for instance, the drug companies took valerian processed it and took out the properties that calm the nerves and made it addictive. God made a valerian plant with all the properties to make it work with less side effects. The dried valerian is the lesser of 2 evils.

In the health food arena care is given to keep herbs and supplements as close to natural as possible, thereby having all the properties our Maker put in the original herb or supplement.

I TOTALLY agree. I have ADD and I think it is great sometimes. My biggest problem is forgetting things and THAT can be annoying. But I am really creative and come up with cool ideas. I can get really into books im reading and love daydreaming. Im not very hyper or anything but I am really spacey and I love just going off into "my own little world" for awhile. So yes. ADD IS A BLESSING!!

HI ALL~
A.D.D is frustrating for me. No, it's not a disease, that word sounds so "final" and "catching" where A.D.D is a disorder passed down and though you never out grow it, you can learn to deal with things and manage.......

I take adderall but side effects is gruesome :doh:aren't they! but I can study well when taking it, where I couldn't even finish school or do homework back in the 60'sand 70's, but it wasn't heard of then either. I always thought I was dumb because I couldn't catch on but needed to have things explained more than once. eventually I lost interest. Hang in there though, its not as uncommon as some would have you to believe;)
God Bless You, DEB~ group hug:hug:

Most people suffer from ADD when they are hyper. Medications usually promote the lack of flow of thought.
sorry, but i cant rely on scientists who don't actually have ADD. i my self most definately have it. i experience it no matter what mood, or how much energy i have.
lol, my attention span has been tested with some sort of headband thingy that measures brain waves. it turned out the longest i can stay totaly focused is less than 6 seconds.
hmm, also i never thought as add as a blessing but now that you put it that way it makes sense. i used to take adderall for it but i refused to take it, and when i did, i hated the side effects and i just like myself the way i am

i also am very fortunate that i seem to have a trait that counters the negative side of add, that is that i tend to be a fast learner and catch on faster than many other people i know.

I have ADHD, I don't take medication for it because everything they gave me made me depressed or turned me into a robot and deprived me of any creative thought. I didn't like that so I became unmedicated for it.. Even though alot of the time I can't pay attention in class unless it's really interesting (Geometry is a pain), I enjoy being who I am without the meds.. I feel more free...
