Had he been convicted under Jewish law he would have been stoned.
Whatever the Jews thought, he was convicted under Roman law, by a Roman judge, and put to death by Romans, in a Roman manner.
And if he was claiming to be King of the Jews, he was probably guilty, according to Roman law, of insurrection. That was the charge, after all, indicated by the placard attached to his cross. (Mark 15:26)

Fair enough...but it was the Pharasees who wanted him dead, but didn't have the authority to do so.
