  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was a t a bible study leat night when one of the women mention that before Eve there was Adam and Lillith. She said that a nun had told her about this in the previous bible study, but I don't remember her mentioning anything about it and I have never heard of that before. Can anyone clear this up for me? Was there really a Lillith and what happened to her?

Sure, don't believe this lady, or the nun.

There simply was no Lillith, so nothing happened to her.

Next time you see this lady, ask her what happened to George. You know, George who came before Adam. ;)

I was pretty sure that this woman was not really knowing what she was talking about because in all my years of being Catholic and going to Catholic school I had never heard of this before. If the nun is there next Monday night, then I am sure that it is going to be brought up because everyone looked at this woman like she had a third head. Thanks for clarifying what I was already pretty sure of :)

I have heard this also. I think the whole Lillith things comes from a story in one of the Jewish commentaries on scripture -- I forget the name of the book. I think it was some "fable" -- a story that wasn't suppose to be taken literally, but was just suppose to teach a moral. (Now I wish I had paid more attention in my intro Religion class as an undergraduate.)

I actually found some infor on her, and the story is probably just a bunch of nonsense.

According to jewish myth, Lilith was Adam's first wife. This was taken from the fact taht there are two creation stories in Genesis; in the first one it says "God created them man and woman" [which could be taken to say that they were made at the same time] and in the second, God created man first, and then woman from man.

So basically, the jews took it to say that there was a first woman before Eve that they called Lilith (i believe the name was taken from a pagan influences). She was a feminist and couldn't abide being submissive to Adam. So she left and became a she-demon and begat many demons and so on and so forth. But she was jealous of Eve, and so whenever a baby dies, it was always blamed on Lilith.

But there is never any mention of her in Scripture and as far as we're concerned, its only a jewish fable to explain the aforementioned Genesis "contradiction" and why babies died.

I have heard the "Lillith" story described as a midrash, which is a Jewish form of commentary on scripture by means of a story. If I'm understanding it correctly, Jews do not believe the Lillith story to be factually true.

I think this is pretty much what Raptor was saying.
