  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This is kind of a dumb question but what is a cloven tongue?

It's simply describing the appearance of fire as it flickers--it splits and divides again, etc.

I've been pondering this for several days and wondering if it was't more of an idiom or something. Could it be connected to Deuteronomy 14 and the command not to eat anything with a cloven hoof. Then when Peter had his dream where he learned there was nothing forbidden.

acts 10:14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

So now in Acts 2 there are cloven tongues "....that every man heard them speak in his own language." the were Jewish men but it seems to be saying all are accepted.

I don't know, maybe that's a stretch.

I think you're reading too much into it. Literally "like divided tongues of fire", it is describing appearance. These aren't literal tongues, it is metaphorical, colorful language to describe what it looked like--it looked like fire.

Peter did not learn nothing is forbidden. He learned not to call any man (Gentiles) common or unclean (Acts 10:28).
