The already got a Veterans memorial from the 1930s covered with a dirty old tarp:

Mojave Cross

Last Christmas a Veteran's home in VT had to remove a cross made of lights from its front lawn.

The cross ended up on the top of a tire store/garage across the street.

The legacy of Leo Pfeffer continues. . .

so I copied the image over so people could make a comparison and come to their own decisions.

I was thinking: I really, really admire Martin Luther, and I think it would be really neat to have a 1,517 foot statue of Luther built and installed at the base of my cemetery plot after I die, so as to commemorate the year Luther posted the 95 Theses on Wittenburg Cathedral!

Frankly, I don't think anybody would have had a problem with the cross, had it not been nearly ten feet tall -- which brings up the next question:

Why do so many conservative Christians keep asking that they be granted special privileges (like installing an ostentatious, ten foot cross in a cemetery) that they're not willing to grant liberal Christians or people of other faiths (or no faith at all)?

Standards for cemetery displays, including size, placement, etc. fall within the purview of responsibility of the owner/site manager of the cemetery, not the ACLU.

The ACLU has no authority whatsoever to remove religious symbols from personal gravesites. Selection of gravestones and religious symbols is the choice of family members, not government, and definitely not the ACLU.

Would you approve if a Buddhist had a nice 100 ft. tall statue of Buddha placed in the cemetery? What about a giant crescent moon for Muslims? Would you approve of a pentacle on a pagans grave site? Do the same standards apply to Christians as the rest, or do you want special privileges as a Christian? Everytime I get the same thing, no response.

If the Cemetery allows it, I've got no prob with an Equivilent (I.E. 10ft not 100ft) statue.

Has there ever been a case where the aclu forced a Buddhist, Muslim, or any other non-Christian to remove a religious symbol from a privately owned cemetery plot?

Despite the fact that the sheer size of the statute will call attention to itself; and it will overshadow every single grave marker in the cemetery; and it will also disrupt other peoples' views within the cemetery.

Hey: it's my gravesite and I can do what I want. :o

...have deliberately put an hugely oversized marker at someone's grave to call attention to itself?

I think the issue at hand is actually courtesy for other people in the cemetery -- something which the people who installed that marker obviously didn't take into consideration.

By the way - I'm taking donations for my 1,517 foot statue of Martin Luther which I want constructed and installed on my grave.

Provided it conforms with cemetery regulations.

It's my gravesite, and I paid for it, and I'm having the statue built myself -- so I can do whatever I want.

People are just trying to discriminate against me because I'm a liberal Christian who admires Martin Luther. :o

Do you feel the aclu should have the right to interfere in the selection of grave markers?

So far, my question goes unanswered.

Why is it that people opposed to crosses, 10 commandments, etc. always use the same argument? "How would you like a 100 ft. Luther?"......."Can I put a 100 ft. Buddha?"......yada frickin yada. Those things are not the issue, are they? The actual issue is the cross. When someone tries to put up a 100 ft. Buddha, start a thread. Until then - it's a diversionary tactic, and that's all.

Lets see A Statue about 1/4 A Mile Tall (0.2873..)
and 1 Foot Thick (Just to save a little material) would use about 86,451,771 Cubic Feet of material (Hope it's both Light & Strong)

EDIT : :)

Example if you use Aluminum it would weight about 14,610,349,299 Pounds :D
