• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What do you think is the maximum acceptable length of a video posted to a internet forum? In other words, how long is too long for an internet video to be used in a post? Do you only watch videos less than five minutes, 30 minutes, no videos at all? Discuss!

I did less than five because zero wasn't an option. I don't like videos because they are much more difficult to respond to, especially if there's something worth quoting.

It's according to the subject and how interested I am in it, I think mostly the shortest is best (5mins), but when the topics are deep and require a lot of explaining then obviously should keep 30 minutes or less, IF can.

Typically, I'm ok with up to a 30 minute video wherein the contents are of varying quality in production; I'll even watch something that is somewhat amateurish in its production if someone thinks it is important and would like for me to join in watching it.

But if someone offers me a video that is beyond that in length, it better be a professional grade video, produced by some higher level, academic, or educated source; and it should be something that is thought provoking.

However, I know everyone has their own limits, and I don't expect anyone to adopt my "standards."

It really depends on the topic and the way it is presented. If it's a topic that interests me, done well and introduced in a post that gives a good summary, I'm happy to watch videos over 1 hour length. If it's just a drive-by post without any explanation, I wouldn't even click a 2 minute video most of the time.

There shouldn't be a maximum acceptable length, no one's forcing anyone to watch anything. Judge a video on its quality, not quantity. But if it's a long video and only a portion of it is relevant to a point being made, it's nice when the poster will point that out, and say "you can skip ahead to 25:30" or whatever.

It also depends on the source and the topic. For instance, if the source is youtube and the topic is "cats doing funny things", then I could probably watch that for 10 minutes. On the other hand, if the source is youtube and the topic is anything non-purely entertainment related, then the correct amount of time is 0.

Highly dependent on subject/topic area and the level of metal effort required.

Dense informational subjects requiring hard cognitive work (eg: mathematics, philosophical concepts, paradoxes) I prefer in short bursts - probably no more than 8-12 minutes

Topics and information requiring moderate cognitive work (history, movie reviews, general politics, special interest, hobbies) are fine in anything between 2 minutes and an hour - but usually are best at 15-40 minutes

Light entertainment/comedy requiring minor cognitive work could be anything up to five or six hours - for example, I will download the audio of 90 minute to five hour D&D videos and listen to them as background noise at work.

Pretty much this.
