  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't have an accent, although Northern friends would disagree since I use the word y'all a lot. :p

I don't think I say any words differently. I do have two nephews, though - one calls me "Ant" and the other calls me "Ont"....which has always amused me since they have the same parents. :p

According to that I have the Midland accent.

I looked this up about Canadian accents.

The phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon for most of Canada are similar to that of the Western and Midland regions of the United States

I can also tell you from experience that I had a couple of Canadian professors in college, and have actually had a couple of Canadian pastors too and there where only a couple of words where I thought "Boy they pronounce that differently". Most of it sounded like they where native to the area.

The interesting thing is that my wife's parents both have southern accents but she and her brother don't have southern accents. Although I will say that she still uses a few words that are used in the South but arn't really used here in the north.

The biggest one we've noticed was the word Buggy instead of cart.

There are also occaisionally words that she thinks I prounce funny. One of the biggest ones was apparently Ronald Reagan's last name.

Ok I took a quiz online and it says Inland North for me.

What American accent do you have?

Your Result: The West

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

Result Breakdown:
96% The West
95% The Midland
75% Boston
73% North Central
33% The Inland North
27% Philadelphia
27% The South
21% The Northeast

The West? I was born and raised in New Jersey. That's how they talk in my hometown.

I'm from the DEEP South (USA) We have our own jargon & very pronounced accents.

ex: never = nevah
dog = dawg
group = ya'll
end = cut (cut the light out)

In fact, books have been written on phrases & dialiects ("Bless your heart", over yonder etc.)

Weird. . . I've been looking up the Inland North thing and trying to figure out if I have it.

I guess the smart money is that I do, because apparently everyone in the midwest knows the difference except the people who have the Inland North accent.

I did have some friends in college tell me that I had a "Great Lakes Accent" which they characterized as an extention of the vowel sounds.

I'm from the DEEP South (USA) We have our own jargon & very pronounced accents.

ex: never = nevah
dog = dawg
group = ya'll
end = cut (cut the light out)

I just have one question for you. . . What do you call object in the picture below?

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

...funny thing is, all of my family is from the Southeast. And I've only been to NYC a couple of times. :)

I can't believe how right they were!

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: Philadelphia
Your accent is as Philadelphian as a cheesesteak! If you're not from Philadelphia, then you're from someplace near there like south Jersey, Baltimore, or Wilmington. if you've ever journeyed to some far off place where people don't know that Philly has an accent, someone may have thought you talked a little weird even though they didn't have a clue what accent it was they heard.
Result Breakdown:
100% Philadelphia
80% The Midland
79% The Northeast
73% The South
70% The Inland North
31% Boston
18% The West
2% North Central

According to the quiz, I have an Inland North accent.
You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

Yes, I am from Wisconsin. I say "soda," not pop, though. It didn't mention that I might (and have) be teased for how I say bag. I say it just fine, thank you very much.
