  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was looking on the internet for the Impossibility Theory. I could not find one. The only theory I could find was called the Absolute Impossibility Theory. It sounded very much like Poe's Law named by Nathan. The law is that there is NOTHING, Absolutely Nothing that somebody somewhere will not believe. In fact the more absurd the idea, the better the chance is that you will find someone to believe what most would consider to be impossible. Something maybe impossible but in all of science there is no absolute impossibility.

Religion is based on absolutes and there are impossibilities. For example, it is impossible for God to lie. He can not do anything that would contradict Himself.

On the contrary, God can lie. God lies through omission and in some cases coercion. He did not reveal the true nature of His creation to any peoples, be they Jewish, Christian, Muslim, etc. He also hardens the hears of the unbelievers, as seen with Pharoah and the proclamations of Jesus(pbuh) and in the Qu'ran. I have not met many folk who will proclaim that God is incapable of deception.

Also, how would God lying be a contradiction?

In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; (Titus 1:2 KJV) God does not lie nor deceive. Satan is a deceiver. Though we are incapable of understanding God and how he works does not mean we are being deceived or lied to, we are just lacking the proper understanding. We often get tangled up in focusing more on religion than God himself. Religion is man made. Religion is the cause of pervertedness, a twisting of the truth, religion takes the Word of God and conforms it to what man wants to see it as. We have to live our life according to the Word, we aren't supposed to try to make the Word fit our lives.

I think that it is beyond our ability to be able to understand. But I do understand that your disappointed with God for not living up to your expectation for Him. I wonder how He feels about you?

How did you glean that from my post? I am not disappointed in God, merely cognizant of man's own failings.

And nothing is beyond human understanding. Each fact that we gain from observation is one step closer to understanding His divine will.

wow...that's shocking.....wow...we could go through this for a lifetime debating whether or not God can lie. God won't lie. Numbers 23:19 "God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man-" Just because it is something man does and something that exist doesn't mean that God will do it. He leaves that to the prince of lies. Its not about whether or not he can't do it either, just like on earth he was tempted and tested and proved that he would not sin. Sin is real and a thing that man does God chooses not to do so. Main reason why God doesn't lie is because he is the only being that doesn't need to. God is love, there is no reason for him to stoop down to our filthly ways. With that in mind the very meaning of love would be meaningless...wait then again if you don't know God you don't know love. your definition of love would be off of earthly desires, lust, and sin. In that reasoning i could understand where people would doubt God because they don't know God or what true love is. Love isn't just a feeling that makes you warm in side it's a drive or passion that moves your very purpose.

I Kings 22:19-23

Micaiah continued, “Therefore hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne with all the multitudes of heaven standing around him on his right and on his left. And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?’

“One suggested this, and another that. Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will entice him.’

“‘By what means?’ the Lord asked.

“‘I will go out and be a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said.

“‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the Lord. ‘Go and do it.’

“So now the Lord has put a deceiving spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The Lord has decreed disaster for you.”

The supernatural and miracles go beyond human understanding. If we were capable of understanding everything then why does the supernatural still exist?
I don't believe that anyone has said that we are capable of understanding everything. And no one has ever demonstrated that the supernatural has ever existed.
Sometimes we have to except there is something much more greater than we are.
Certainly if by "greater" you mean "larger", then we must accept that. And most of us have to admit that there are those smarter and better informed than we are. What has not been demonstrated is that there is any species or entity that is smarter and better informed than the human species. And it seems very likely that modern science is better informed than iron-age theocrats.

And God did explain the Creation process just the way He wants us to know it. It actually doesn't matter what the Creation week looked like to an unbiased observer. God has explained that it was His workings and not the result of randomness or mistake or the natural effect of sun shining on rocks. We have the entire Cosmos of sun shining on rocks to show that life is not just a chemical that tries harder. Plus we have endless experiments proving you don't get out more than you put in.

The Lord himself is not a deceiver, again we do not understand all of his ways. He sent Satan to Job also, he did not deceive him, but tested him. God does not want us to live in fear of being lied to or being deceived. He wants us to trust in him.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7 KJV)

Whereas here God sent a spirit specifically to deceive someone. Don't just skip the parts of the Bible you don't like.

Still, God is not a deceiving God, God is not the author of confusion. Why so much doubt in God? Ahab was an evil man who caused the Lords people to sin.
And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee: because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord. Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy posterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]eth against the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, for the provocation wherewith thou hast provoked me to anger, and made Israel to sin. (1 Kings 21:20-22 KJV)
So in order for the Lord to protect his own people from Ahab the Lord brought evil upon him. Which is what micaiah was prophesing in 1 kings 17-23. God does not lie to or deceive his own people. But apparently he may if you are against him, but I don't see any point in worrying about it if you are with him. Are you with him? We also know that whoever is against the Lord are his enemies, and he will show wrath to his enemies, but we know this already so what is the point you are trying to make here?

The point I am trying to make is that your original statement was wrong, if you take the whole Bible as providing the kind of truth that you think it does. Your original claim was that God does not lie or deceive. That's not the same thing as claiming that God only deceives those who are against him, a group that I suspect you think includes most of the human race.

My larger point is that the Bible often does not speak with a single voice on questions. One biblical author will make the sweeping statement that God cannot lie or deceive, while another will describe God deliberately deceiving someone. The only way you get the Bible to be a single book with a uniform point of view is by ignoring parts of it, or twisting them all out of shape. Both are ways of making the Bible say what you want it to, rather than listening to what it actually says.

Exactly, God does not always give us what we want, He always provides what we need. We do not always know what is good & right & proper and true. He always knows. "to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us," eph 3:20

Nonsense. Science and the Bible are both filled with paradoxes. If you do not work your way through them then you will not learn and grow in understanding. This often requires a paradigm shift.

God allows people to be deceived and He takes responsibility for that even though He does not deceive them.
