• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Welcome Tallyn

Thanks for sharing about you. You're a strong person to have been through so much. Aren't you glad you have Jesus on your side? I don't understand how folks get along without him. This site is really great. I've enjoyed getting to know everyone. I'm sorry you've had such a rough time but I'm glad you're here with us now. You'll be on my prayer list. By the way, I went to High school in Owasso, OK. Seems like many years ago.

God Bless You

Hello tallyn,

Welcome. Sounds like you've been through a whole lot. We have quite a bit in common.

Have you been diagnosed bipolar I or II. Just wondering.

I can see you are marrie dand have 3 children. Is your husband supportive of your illness?

I carry the Bipolar I diagnosis. It got changed from II when I was hospitalized for mania.

I think my husband is as supportive as he is able. He leans on me too much and gets scared when I have to go to the hospital.

Speaking of which I may have to go inpatient in the next day or so. It seems to be headed in that direction.

Yes hugs and prayers. My husband is the same. Leans too much gets very scared when it comes to me in the hospital.

Why does it seem to be heading in that direction? W/ mania or depression? Or both?

mostly depression, but with the energy of mania--probably mixed.

I'm having lots of thoughts of suicide, but no urges yet.

*sigh* Bipolar sux!

  • Bipolar I Disorder — In this type, you have had at least one episode of mania or mixed mood and often experience depression too. In between, your mood may be normal. Sometimes your mood swings happen when the seasons change.
  • Bipolar II Disorder — In this type, you have had at least one episode of depression and at least one period of hypomania. Hypomania is a milder form of mania. In between, your mood may be normal. Sometimes your mood swings happen when the seasons change.
  • Cyclothymic Disorder — This is a milder form of bipolar disorder. You may go back and forth between mild depression and a slightly elevated mood. But your mood swings are shorter and less severe. Many people with cyclothymic disorder go on to have a stronger type of bipolar disorder. This doesn’t happen to everyone, though.
  • Bipolar Disorder Not Otherwise Specified — This type of bipolar disorder is when you do not fit into the types mentioned above. The feelings of bipolar disorder vary from person to person.
Some people have what is called “rapid-cycling bipolar disorder.” This means they have had 4 or more periods of mania and/or depression in a year.

Thank you...I use to be a rapid cycler. But meds have stablized me to the point I am either 1 or 2...I'll have to ask my counselor and dr....That helped me to understand the differences...thank you very much and God Bless You

Hi all,
I'm bipolar II. I've had 3 hypomanic episodes but mostly just deep deep depression. Gratefully I've been real stable for a few years. In fact in the last 4 months were trying to come of some of my multitide of meds. Right now I'm decreasing my Effexor XR. It's been a little rough. I'm not sure if I'm having withdrawal effects or a return of bipolar symptoms. Yesterday I slept for 36 hours staight and didn't take any of my meds for two doses. NOT good. I feel kind of shakey today and sad feeling. Please pray this passes quickly and isn't a return of symptoms just a blip off normal for a day. My dh says I shouldn't start worrying quite yet. I know i'll talk about it w/ my tdoc on Fri. Meanwhile, I'm going to get out of myself by praying for Tallyn, and ya'll and enjoying Anglekiss's smilie definition of her moods! Please forgive me for rambling.

Right now I'm decreasing my Effexor XR. It's been a little rough. I'm not sure if I'm having withdrawal effects or a return of bipolar symptoms.

Effexor can be one of the difficult ones as far as withdrawal, especially for those of us who are sensitive to withdrawal. I had a very hard time decreasing Effexor. In my very very uneducated opinion, as a wild guess, not being a doctor or health professional, I would guess that anxiety from the withdrawal is what's happening since Effexor isn't something used for the effects of Bipolar Disorder and if anything Effexor may cause mania. I'm sure I'm saying things you already know, but just letting you know what my experience was.

My experience is just one data point out of a million and I wasn't taking any "bipolar" drugs at the time. FWIW

If it gets too bad you can ask your doctor to go back up partially or to where you were for a short time. Don't torture yourself as I have done in the past.

That post was probably more disclaimer than info.

Thanks lemonflavor for the info. Although I recognize Effexor isn't used to treat the Bipolar per se. we use it to treat my depressive symptoms. I'm also on 2 mood stabalizers, an antipsychotic and a stimulant on top of two other antidepressants. Quite the cocktail and I'm glad to be losing some of it. Although I dream of getting off all meds, like most of us do, in reality I know I'll probably always be on a number of them. I had just gotten to the point where I was so sedated, my words were slurred most of the time, in a stupor, I was a pain to get out of the bed in the morning and I slept 9-10 hours on weekdays and 12-16 on weekends. I was miserable and friends co-workers, and probably my patients noticed it. I'm doing much better now that I've come down off a little of the meds and for the most part I've been stable. The last 24 hours has been interesting but I'm trying to give another 24 hours to see if its just been a blip or a trend in the wrong direction. Thanks though for an idea to look at.

When going down on Effexor I had this weird brain thing that others have described. If I turned my head to one side quickly, it felt like my brain was still straight ahead. Then when turning back to forward it felt like my brain was still turned to the side.

This in addition to anxiety happened on a number of drugs and took a few days to subside with each decrease.

This went on for over two years while trying and discontinuing drugs. I've been taking pretty much the same cocktail since November and although my condition is still pretty bad at least I'm not constantly going through withdrawal or side effects of going on a drug that isn't for me. And I'm pretty much staying out of the abyss. God has been teaching me so much.

Feel free to ask questions or comment on what I've written. I originally had written more, but got logged out.

You take Lexapro, anti-depressant (some say anti-anxiety, hasn't done much anxiety work for me) and Klonopin 1.5mg a day total. Do you also have a type of panic disorder or anxiety?

I wondered about Lithium this doctor lady I talk to says to takes long to work and there are better alternatives - but you sound like you've been on it.

Do anxiety and bi-polar pretty much go together? If they did that would make a lot of sense to me, if not I would wonder why you take Klonopin.

Klonopin has been a wonder pill for me when I need it, I have never taken a pill like that to calm me down so fast and well. I am no medication expert, but the AmbienCR made me feel terrible after the sleep and while I was dosing off. It actually caused me more anxiety, but it may be because of a relation to sleeping pills and a suicide attempt.

It just seems like you are on a lot of medication, I hope you do get better, I just am saying that because I was a little suprised. I am glad you made an honest post about your medication though, it helps me too.

I hope your inpatient visit goes well too. :)
