  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You know, I took a year off and then I did co-op, which adds a year. Honestly by the time I got around to finishing my last year as an undergrad, I knew what I wanted and having someone younger than me did not matter. I'm also the only black student in all of my classes. It could have made me self-conscious, but once again, I know what I'm there for and I go after that. It's not an issue for me and it's not an issue for my classmates.

Most people don't finish their college education in 4 years. I am going to finish in 6 - of course I had to drop out a semester due to family emergency. Depending on what your major is you could be in school for a long time. I have a friend studying physical therapy and she's going to be in school for 8 years. Don't worry about what other people are doing. Education happens at different paces for different people. Like my situation people don't realize that I've had to postpone my education for a while.

Keep doing your thing. You have your own motivations and your own goals. Stick to them.

I was told earlier this week that it's the fact that we earn a degree which matters in the end. All else is irrelevant.
I think so to. But I am in the same boat as you. Anyway... I have a genius buddy of mine who took longer to get his bachelors than either of us. So I think it is pretty fair to say that time shouldn't matter.

There's no need to feel bad about that. Lots of people take awhile to complete their college education. There are a lot of factors, for one some students may take a semester off or they may switch majors, which can add on time. Also there are problems that arise that may cause people to take longer like money problems are a family emergency. I went to school with students who were much older than me (like 50 :)).

I'll be 36 in Feb. and plan to start taking some classes beginning this next month. Am I going to be older than a good number of the people in my class? Yep. Will it be awkward? Yep. Do I care? Of course. Will it stop me? No.

Oh yeah I started going to college when I was 22 but I only ever go to get very specific skills, never for a degree. Maybe one day.

Some people are stupid. End of story. I'm talking about the people who say stuff to you. It doesn't matter what you do in life. You could be at the top or at the bottom or somewhere in the middle and there will always be someone who has to make a stupid comment about SOMETHING. It's just gonna happen.

But the thing is, it makes it really hard to deal with when your parents aren't there for you. That's really hard. Because if your parents won't back you up, then you feel like who will right? That's a really bad feeling. But the thing to do is just get tougher than you are. You can deal with this.

I know how you feel too. All I'm doing is going to a community college. A two year college. And I'm already in my third year. How do you think that would feel? Yeah, it sucks but there is nothing I can do about it so I just have to deal with it. I had no idea what I needed to do when I first graduated so I wasted two years taking classes I didn't need and whatnot. And it makes me really mad at myself sometimes but there is really nothing I can do about it so I am slowly accepting it. I don't know if you already said it but why are you in this situation? Did you just take a break between high school and college or quit college and go back? Or did you do what I did?

The bottom line is that you have to not care what people think. I know it's really hard when your parents are like that too....but maybe you have to not care what they think either?

I've been thinking about this and I was just thinking why is this such a big deal to people? Myself included. I was just sitting here thinking about college and I feel so jealous of people that are going to universities and are actually doing the college thing while I'm sittin here going to a community college. I really hate it. Like I wish my parents would have been more caring about this. Because guess what when you're in high school you don't really think about this if your parents or someone around you doesn't tell you. It's just not natural when you're that young to think about your future. You just live for the moment. You know the whole invincible thing.

Now that I'm an adult I really get what college is about and I wish I would have figured this all out when I was younger. I just hate that I can't be like other people when it comes to college. And yeah I could go now, but then comes this whole issue. Like who wants to just be going to college when you're 21? I don't like it and apparently other people don't either and I can't figure out why. I guess I kinda feel like I wasted a part of my life when I could have been going to college. And now that I realize I really want it, I feel like I've just missed out on something. Life sux.

What's wrong with community college? To me you're getting an education, doesn't matter if it's a community college or a university, or whatever. Sometimes I wish I would have went to a community college instead of going to a university. Because it's a lot harder and there's more pressure it seems. There were times when I thought about dropping out because the work become overwhelming and there was times when I had to sit in classroom with at 100 other students.

Now that I'm an adult I really get what college is about and I wish I would have figured this all out when I was younger. I just hate that I can't be like other people when it comes to college. There are people who go to college much older than you, believe me. I've met people who were in their 40's and 50's who were going to college to earn a degree. Getting an education is never waste of time (even though sometimes it feels like it is). So don't feel bad. :)
