This icon really brings the horrid spiritual reality of abortion alive for me. Iconographer, or anyone, who or what does the sperpent haired woman represent?

I think the woman is supposed to represent a demon or the devil. Many fervent pro-aborts are hardcore pagans who worship "goddesses", and I've heard more than one say that their abortions were "sacrifices to Artemis".

Its probably supposed to be Lilith. According to obviously wrong Jewish legend (since it contradicts Scripture) God created Adam and Lilith out of the dirt of the ground, but she asserted her superiority over Adam, at which time God turned her into a demon and made Eve from one of his ribs. Lilith then made a vow to eat Adam's children or something like that. Lilith is the hero of feminism and many femenist shindigs are named after her.

While this icon may hold some meaning for some people aren't icons supposed to be windows to heaven? To me this is a kinda disgusting and disturbing subject for an icon. Sorry but that's my opinion.

I hope not.

The woman on the throne on the right is named "abortion, the new Herod" and the four women offering their kids are named cruelty, frivolousness, insensibility and lust. On the left hand side there is an unwed mother, carrying her cross, a blessed family and a repentant woman. The saint in the centre of the icon is St Stylianos, the patron saint of children.

I'm sorry but I don't like the idea. I wouldn't want to see it in a church.

This icon is unorthodox. It uses Iconography to make a political point, and while it is a point that I agree with, I think it is wrong to do so. Icons are meant to instill the stillness of Heaven in our souls, and not to bring us to anger over the wrath of sin. I would suggest the Virgin of the Sign be a much more Orthodox icon to represent our Pro-Life stand.

When you begin to paint an icon, your intention should be to depict things as they are when fully illumined by the light of Christ. That being said, I don't think the perfect grace of Heaven would have such an event going on in it, or would want to remember that such an event happened during history. Icons are not socio-political tools, they are windows into Heaven. I will add that question to my FAQ which I am forming as that is an excellent question!
