• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have been taking 5 mg of Abilify for a few days now. I was in a major episode and I took it and it stopped the mania fast. I was taking it in the evenings and found it gave me major insomnia. I mean no sleep at all and then I had wake ups every 2 hours. So then I changed to taking it in the mornings, and still I have the wake ups every 2 hours.

BTW, I fired my last pdoc so I have no pdoc right now. I just had a bottle of Abilify I had never taken that I am now taking. I hope to be able to call on the 21st of Oct and make an appointment with a Christian pdoc who also does Christian counseling. This is very important to me.

What do I do to combat this so I can sleep? Anyone else have this problem with insomnia and Abilify? Any recommendations? I take 2 sleeping pills too but it doesn't help.

Thanks All!

Dear Mysojourn

There is a good chance your still running on the manic side.

As you know sleep is so very important to a bipolar, or things can get worse fast.

I think you need to call any doctor that would be able see you right away and get something that will give you relief. If you let them know of your appointment they will surly give you meds to last till then.

I keep a supply of tylenol #3's on hand for just such as this. This is not the recommended med and has to be restricted to times they are really needed. But it works for me. They are a downer and give me the sleep I need.

Generally if you show yourself to not abuse substance the doctors will work with you.

Don't let this go unattended!!!

Insomnia is a side-effect of Abilify. I don't know what to say. Most times Dr.s prescribe another med to fix the problems with the first med. If you love everything else about Abilify maybe that is something you can do. Maybe you can find a natural sleep remedy. Maybe you can use that time to pray.

Blessings

Thanks Wonderwaleye, Washclan,

Yes, I like Abilify so far. I don't feel drugged and mushy brained and hung over like I do with Seroquel and Depakote which help me sleep.

But I'd rather struggle sleeping and feel this great on the Abilify. My brain and thoughts are clear.

So, I can deal with insomnia other ways.

I wasn't sure if it was the Abilify or just me.

If anyone else has any tips, please let me know.

Hi Alive Again,

Yes, I have settled on Unisom. It's working pretty well actually, but I feel a little groggy in the a.m.

I have to get into a good night time routine to get myself sleepy early and to not drink too much in the evening so I don't have to get up to use the bathroom.

This part is a little difficult because I am more of a night owl than an early bird but... I gotta get up early and go to work so what can you do?

So far so good. Thanks for the imput.
