Abiding In Death

James 5:​

19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;
20 Let him know, that he who converts the sinner from the error of his way
shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back,
20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way
will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.

“do err from the truth”; “wanders from the truth”.
In spite of the softer terms ‘err’ and ‘wander’ James here is dealing with deception.

1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1 John 3:7 Little children, let no one deceive you.
He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.

Matthew 24:
4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.
5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.
11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.
24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders
to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

Revelation 12:9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan,
who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

‘Save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins’.

1 John 3:​

14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren.
He who does not love his brother abides in death.
15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that
no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

1 John 5:​

16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask,
and He will give him life for those who commit sin not to death. There is sin leading to death.
I do not say that he should pray about that.
17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not to death.
