He did have a hodgepodge of academic interests in his youth, though, flitting from studying medieval history to philosophy, then to math and molecular biology.

If I remember correctly, his dabbling in molecular biology was a short-lived post-doc in which he was tasked with tinkering with some computer programs in the MolBiol department - not as an actual researcher.
