The Cross and The Assassins
In the year of our Lord 1187, the flower of Chivalry in the Holy Land went forth to fight with the followers of Mohammed under the command of the Sultan of Egypt— Saladin. The flower of Chivalry withered in the pass of Hattin. The forces of Jerusalem ventured out, and having suffered without water for days, were surrounded and almost completely annihilated by the infidels. A small few managed to cut their way through the Mohammedeans. But more was lost than just the lives of good Christians noble and lowly alike—The True Cross upon which Christ had died. The Cross had been taken by the forces of the Sultan.
After Hattin, the Christians of Outremer(Christian holdings in the Holy Land) were sore pressed. On October 2, 1187 Saladin captured the Holy City and sold everyone who could not pay ransom into slavery. Saladin drug the Holy Cross from the tail of his horse through the city streets in rejoicing to their Allah. Acre too fell soon after Jerusalem and other Crusader states fell under the shadow of the Jihad. The True Cross, upon which our Lord died, was once lost to the Sassanids in 614 but during the reign of Heraclius, Emperor of Byzantium it was recovered by strength of arms. When the first Crusaders entered Jerusalem they found the True Cross within the Holy Sepulchre. It was rather a piece of the True Cross, inside a larger cross of gold. For the Cross had been split up, and was sent to other parts of Christendom. The armies of Jerusalem carried the True Cross where ever they went…including the pass of Hattin. After Saladin paraded the Blessed Cross around the streets of Jerusalem it seemed to have disappeared. Little is recorded of its existence…
In the Year of our Lord 1191, Richard (the Lion Hearted) King of England had successfully captured Acre from Saladin. The Mohammad prisoners, who surrendered the city, were to be exchanged in return for gold, Christian prisoners, and the True Cross. Saladin delayed in giving all three. Richard thus angered had the prisoners executed. Saladin executed his Christian prisoners. Richard sought to reclaim the True Cross, and put it once more in the hands of good Christians. He sent sealed parchments to a few of those whom he believed could most likely execute his order to find the Cross. They were all to meet within one years time (1192) at the Crusader stronghold of Tyre and from there to search for the Cross of Christ.
In the northern most tower on the Feast of Saint Justin (the 1st of June) each was to bring his parchment, and know the secret utterance written within each note “crux spes unica” (The cross is the only hope)….
I suppose that it would thus begin on June 1, 1192 at the northern most tower of the city of Tyre. You will see why I have selected this date eventually. I recommend that people choose either characters who are Frank (French), Norman, or English. I mean you can make something kind of cool, like Greek. So long as you aren’t and “infidel”(a Moslem) it should be ok. If you are a woman…well you have better had a good reason why Richard sent you! Or you could even have….someone received the letter by freak chance (i.e. the messenger was shot and the person to whom it was supposed to be given too died too) and took their place. I mean lets face it…not many ladies were Amazons back then! And there is always the pretending to be a man, thing. People could choose to be a Knight Templar, or a Knight Hospitaller (just know a little bit of what you are talking about—they are warrior monks). I recommend knowing a little bit about this time period….I mean they didn’t have plate armor, so its going to be just chain mail, for most everyone who is Christian. No craziness either…like a person who is totally great at everything or things that are just stupid—common sense…it’s a realistic RPG not a Fantasy. Sure things will be fluffed up a little but still.
As to the Assassins…they will come.
How about something like this...I will admit it was a bit hard getting the whole "random-group-come-together-and-start-a-quest" thing, so that can be changed. But I thought the setting was pretty cool. And of course the Title can be changed too.
