A simple light hearted thread about nature. It can include experiences with nature, gifs, videos. It is wide open. I will contribute some of my poetry on it and my experiences. Sometimes they have been humorous and sometimes awe inspiring.
In autumn the leaves are scattered
like fragments of a rainbow shattered

I remember in about grade one the class went on a short field trip to the woods across the road to gather fallen leaves. We then pressed them in wax paper I recall. In my memory it seems that they had a bright glow. And something as simple as collecting colorful leaves was adventurous and enjoyable. The simplicity of it all seems beautiful :)

That's a beautiful topic. I love nature. To me, it's a simple and always available encounter with God's outstanding majesty and power. It's so glorious to see what His hands have created. Everything in nature is in such perfect order than it amazes me how much our Creator cared, and how glorious His ideas are. :)

Yes I have had some good meditations in nature. Nature walks and talks with God. The elegant simplicity of it may usher us back to a child like state. And we may see reflected in nature the face of God. As well as humour. A friend of mine used to feed three squirrels that came together in his backyard for feeding. He would come out for smoke breaks and always have a bag of peanuts handy. He thought the squirrels must know the smell of his cigarette after awhile because when he smoked they would often come.

Well they got awful fat from his habit. One day he said he forgot to bring any peanuts. The three squirrels came and he was cornered while they waited in anticipation. He said he never wanted to be in that position again lol. And once when he was typewriting on an old typewriter he looked up and there was a squirrel inside the window practically on his typewriter. They are cute but don't want them in the house. That happened before.

I think I'm waiting for snow. (Last year was not a good year for snowfall in NE Ohio. It was too warm and the snow would melt overnight.)

I love when the whole world is covered in a foot of snow, which acts like sound insulation, and you can no longer hear the ambient sounds of man (even when they are driving right past your house). It's just...silent. :)

Hmmm...I never really thought about it that way. Cool.

I like when the trees are sheathed in ice. Everything is Crystaline. And good quote for what you shared.

Do you have early childhood memories of nature? I remember being about 3 or 4 years old. Our family lived over my Grandfather's hardware store in the country. I was just in the back area and saw a butterfly rest upon a flower. It was a full sunny sky. I just marvelled at it and did not want to catch it or anything. But with the wild white rabbits that was a different story. I crawled after one. Just had to have it. And it hopped under the stairwell leading up to our apartment. I thought I had it cornered and came in fast and bonk...hit my head on part of the stairwell lol. Of course the rabbit hopped away back to munch in the garden. For some reason that memory sticks in my mind. Even though I might think the knock on my head could have knocked it away lol.

We now have so much snow over here. It's crazy. I love seeing the huge fluffy snowflakes fluttering in the air, they look like they're dancing. What I love the most about it is the feeling that God is directing each snowflake's flight, so it's like... encountering His amazing power in such a simple thing that we often don't pay any attention to. I know I might appear weird, but I love catching those snowflakes with my tongue too. :) I think it's cute. And I absolutely love it when I can just lie in thw snow and think about God. What I don't like is ice... I am so terrified of it. I always slip on ice, which results in a lot of bruises...

Nice except for the ice.

This is my favourite time of year. Everything looks very beautiful, and the colours are amazing.

I have lots of photos of home - my favourite place on earth, so will share some later on.

Cool! I can't wait to see! I will share some of my favorite photos, too. :) That's my town

When I was a young child, I was walking home and saw some very pretty white flowers. I decided to pick a big bunch of them for my mother. They were growing under a hedge and I thought they were so lovely. When I arrived home, I presented them to Mum and she thanked me and then put them in a vase and took it out to the laundry and stood it on the windowsill there. Odd place to put them, I thought. When my father got home from work, he went and had a look at the flowers when Mum told him about it, and then he told me they were what we call 'onion' flowers. They're very pretty, but have a very strong onion scent. The funny thing is that I never noticed the onion scent at all when picking them. I've encountered them heaps of times since and never fail to notice the pungent scent. I guess the excitement of getting some flowers for Mum nullified the cons of the flowers. :D

A few weeks ago I and another brother, had the opportunity to visit the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. I had seen pictures and shows on TV, but to actually stand there and see it for myself was breathtking. We stood there speechless at the majesty and grandeur of God's creation. What was supposed to be a planned one hour stop, turned into three hour's and worth every minute of it. It was simply magnificent!!

Sounds breath taking. The only thing comparable is when i climbed a mountain in Colrado. It was all heat wave at the base and snow and strong cold winds at the top. Maybe I can scan some pictures at work sometime of it. My scanner is broken at home.

I used to pick flowers as a kid for my mother too. Often things like lady slippers in the woods. They are rare now. Back then and for many years the root of the lady slipper was used as a sleep formula. It calms down the nervous system as I understand. Nowadays this has been outlawed because they are an increasingly rare species of plant life. There were lots in the forest and now I don't see them.

We lived in town, so wild flowers were few and far between. But we did used to go to my grandparents' place on the outskirts of town to collect watercress in the gully behind their home, though. At least, my parents collected it and we slipped and slid through the swamp where the watercress was growing.

One little flower I have a special fondness for is the vinca plant. Vincristine was used in the chemotherapy my son had for treatment of leukaemia when he was 5. (He is 25 years old now and fully recovered.) Amazing that the common little vinca plant has such life-saving properties. God provided well. :)

Yes Joy. That is good news. Praise God. :)

I studied Herbalism as a hobby for awhile. And it is interesting that the Dandelion which is a weed yet has so many rejuvenating properties for the organs. And the sunflower which always turns its face toward the sun even when it is shrouded in clouds.

I like to be close to nature. I used to feed Ravens at a spot in Halifax. I saw them nesting there and had some popcorn. So I made my raven call and they responded. I would walk in and sit on a stone after spreading some popcorn on the ground. Then they would swoop down with a few flaps of their wings. It was kind of funny. They ambled up to the food and kept on looking at me by turning their head slowly side to side. After awhile one crow would fly to meet me at the entrance. And it would follow me in staying about ten feet behind. In my mind I named it hopping crow.

In Dancing with wolves the fellowship that grew slowly between the man and the wolf was great. Nature is great. One of the things I get some joy out of is visiting the dog park area. I can bring a book and sit on a bench. Seeing the big and small dogs interact is funny at times. Especially when the big dog pretends to be submissive to the little one. And the unbounding energy that youing dogs are puppies have.

Animals are definitely something. I do not know how to embed on here still and will link some videos of animals I liked

That's cool about the ravens, Forge. :)

My father and I enjoy watching birds go about their daily lives. We're not hardcore 'twitchers' - we just enjoy watching them from the window. I was pretty thrilled to see some tui for the first time a couple of years ago at my father's place and even more thrilled to hear its distinctive call in one of our trees this spring. I rushed to the window and there he was, atop the tree. :)

This is a photo of a tui which I found online. The photographer is John Brock.
