and the present body of people wanting to be Christian is that we can't agree on the same goals or roles. I believe that a unifying principle is to stop talking about salvation etc. and focus on helping one another develop their personal truth.

What you seem to be espousing is Secular Humanism and New Age Philosophy . Since Chrisendom can't get their act together , and has failed in the asupices of leadership , we should strive to work on the " self " , independent of religion .
We are a trichotomous , biological entity [ machine , if you wish ]. We are a spirit , who dwells for a time in a corporal suit , and has an immortal soul [ mind, will , emotions ].
The desires of our " carnal nature - body " are often at odds with the direction of our " spiritual " conscience [ God in us ]. The improvement of ourself is from the inside out [ 3 Jn. 1.2 ], we will prosper , as we line up our lives with the will of God , both here on earth and in heaven .
Or our carnal nature will prosper , as we line up with the worldly " ways and means " and our spiritual element will be held accountable for quite some time , for our carnal decisions .
The mountain before the youth , is to sort between the works of wood , hay , and stubble [ busy work , work of pride , work of status ] and silver , gold , and jewels [ work of the kingdom - Mt. 25.32-42 ].
