  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I don't know if this is the correct place to post this, but here we go.

Once upon a time there was a man who lived with his ver old mother.
His mother was so weak and helpless that he had to feed and take care of her all the time.

The kings daughter saw the young man and fell in love, and some time later, they got married.

Now the princess had to take care of her husbands mother too.
But suddenly, while the princess was feeding her husbands mother, the mother bited the princess hand, and didn't let go.

The husband begged his mother to let go of his wifes hand, but she didn't listen.
Now he only got two options; He could cut off his wifes hand, or break his mothers jaw.

What would you do?

(Yes, those two options are stupid, I know, but this is only theoretical, and for no purpose at all really. Only for those who are bored and feels like discussing or thinking about something :) )

Oh alright I'll bite (no pun intended)

Break the jaw. Jaws heal.

You better be going somewhere with this. Or maybe I ruined your plan by being an agnostic atheist. ;)

My belief is non-theistic too. =P

I got tons of stories like this one. This one was short and easy to write down. But it's definatley not the best one.

Hey, would you really break your old mothers jaw?
Remember how old she is, her jaw might not heal.

Still, having one's hand cut off is a much more severe injury that having a broken jaw.

Besides, why did she bit her in the first place?

I think I'd go with the jaw too....it could heal, or at least be pinned back into place.

Besides, I'm squeamish...the blood/bones involved with cutting off someones hand...:sick::sick:

But I don't think she would be able to eat again.

Yeah, not that fresh... =P

But she probably won't be able to eat again. And what happens if you don't eat? =)

Really, no idea. Let's change the question to that instead maybe?

Perhaps another solution could be found. Maybe holding her nose so that she couldn't breathe and had to let go in order to breathe through her mouth?

Yeah, I would definatley use another, more harmless method if it happened in real life.

But these are the only options in this story. =P

A can write down a new one, where you have to think more.

Presumably, we're obligated to minimize the harm that we cause, and theres no doubt that breaking someone's jaw causes significantly less harm than amputating someone's hand. Obviously, the wife will suffer much more for having her hand cut off than the mother would suffer for getting coldcocked in the jaw.

There are actually lots of scenarios like the one you mentioned above, but the one I'm most familiar with is something like "a man gives you two choices: slap your mother in the face or poke out your cats eye with a needle", and obviously your mother will suffer less for getting slapped than your cat will suffer for having its eye blinded with a needle.

Well, as I wrote in earlier messages, it might not be so sure that the mother survives that. Remember how old and weak she is, her jaw might not heal.
And without a jaw you cannot eat or swallow.

Yet I do agree that I would have chosen to break her jaw too. But I don't think it's that obvious as it looks that breaking her jaw would be more harmless than cutting the hand off.

But.. but... I was waiting for a bait and switch. Some cunning metaphor for why a certain religion is right.
You mean it was really just an honest ethical question?
This shakes up my faith in CF to no end.
   ;)

It's just a honest, ethical question, yes. No matter what religion you follow. =P

The mother will die anyway :
If you are old and you need someone to feed u, you are near death !
If the mother keep bitting the hand she will die, no food and you said it she will die without food !
IF you break the Jew she will die, she cant eat !
And why break a such love story because of a crazy old mother ? :D
She lived her life, now its the other turn to live !
:D

At the risk of sounding racist, this is a very funny typo.

I'd break the jaw. A jaw can heal, a hand can't grow back.
