Hello out there in CF land. I am a professional scientist and a non-Christian. I am not here to try and poke fun at anyone, but rather to try and open up lines of communication that sometimes seem to be lost between professional (non-Christian) scientists and Christians. I imagine I will mostly be posting in science-related topics, although I have a strong interest in history, archaeology, and comparative theology.

Anyways, as respectfully as possible I hope to provide a window into the scientific consensus on relevant issues. I have noticed that many scientists often have a distaste for communicating with Christians (and soometimes vice versa), but since we all live on this planet, it would work better if everyone talks with one another. Thanks to anyone who reads this, I look forward to productive discourse. :)

PS I think that's great that you're here to give your scientific input. I just received my B.S. in Biology Education, so I have such a great love for science, even though I didn't go into research... but I'll be teaching future scientists :) I think it's very possible to have faith and still believe in scientific theories. I just think people get so offended easily and think that science is only here to attack faith... not back it up... that many just get turned off automatically without taking the time to learn. Hopefully you can help with that ^_^

Oddly enough, I just finished reading "The Language of God" by Francis Collins, the head of the Human Genome project. This man is a very committed scientist, and a very committed Christian.

His book elicits a harmony between faith and science without denying any fundamental discoveries. He is a Theistic Evolutionist like myself, and shares in the book why he has come to that conclusion, as well as why he is a Christian, as opposed to another brand of theist.

I highly reccomend the book. I found it brilliant and clear.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!

Thanks

I have only skimmed Francis Collins book, but his scientific work is deservedly praised, and he is certainly a comitted Chrsitian and theistic evolutionist.

I appreciate his dicussion on how theistic evolution (as Francis espouses it) is different from the current Intelligent Design movement, which I have to say lacks scientific redibility at the moment.

That said, his message will not appeal to all Christians, nor to all scientists. Because both science (as a methodology) and Chrsitianity serve to explain the world to us (at least in part), there will always be some friction where scientists or the faithful think one side is trying to muscle into to their territory.

Indeed, the huge variation of opinions on these boards (even in the Christians Only section) shows that there is clearly a wide range of ideas about the world and science, and religions and their interaction with the two amongst modern CHristians themselves.

Talking about these issues is the only way to address them, and The Language of God appears to be a very good way to start the conversation.
