The lead scientist behind stem-cell research that uses sheep to produce humanized organs is Esmail Zanjani, chairman of animal biotechnology at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Funded by millions of dollars in federal grants, Zanjani and his team of researchers hope to use the sheep to incubate organs that one day can be transplanted into humans or cells that can be injected into human fetuses to treat genetic diseases in vitro....

....Eventually, from 7 percent to 15 percent of their organs are composed of human cells, Zanjani said.

Fifteen per cent human/sheep today, thirty per cent human/sheep tomorrow, fifty per cent human/sheep next year, maybe ninety per cent human in five years?

At what point will god infuse a human soul into a hybrid - will ninety-nine per cent human, one per cent sheep work?

And when will they begin to cross humans and chimps? I need someone I can get to mow my yard on the cheap.

Yeah, and major Kusanagi said "If man realises technology is within reach he achieves it, like it's darn near instinctive" :)
It seems like anything that is possible for us to do, we do. I don't see the problem with creating animals intended for spare parts, we've been exploiting animals since we discovered they could drag a plough.

We have manipulated animals since the dawn of time. We turned wild fowl into docile, retarded chickens for food. We turned the majestic wolf into a quivering chihuahua for amusement. Now we change the sheep into spare parts. We are simply taking the next step. Instead of playing with traits thru breeding, we are rewriting them by hand.

But on the topic at hand:

Ian Malcom once said: "Scientists were so preocupied weather or not they could that they didn't stop to think of weather or not they should."
And the ironic part is that scientists are not particularly accurate in their predictions about the weather.

Personally, this looks pretty interesting, both from a scientific standpoint and a 'dude, awesome!' standpoint. One of my friends, who's studying to be a vetrenarian, has had the opportunity with geeps: half sheep, half goats. Apparently, they don't mix smoothly and they turn out with a goat's head and a sheep's body, or things like that.
Needless to say, they look very cute and very silly.
