I've never had God invite me out to dinner either, but my relationship with him is far deeper than that I have with people I've known for years.

The relationship with God is based on absolute truth. you can hide nothign from Him, and you must be honest with Him and yourself. He is the only one I turn to when I need help. I keep things bottled up. He is the only one who knows what I need and what I'm feeling before I realise it myself. My relationship with god is much more than I can ever have with any human because he knows more about me that i do.

It is hard for someone who doesn't believe to understand the special relationship a Christian has with God, through Jesus Christ. The magnitude and truth of it, how it manages to saturate each moment of our lives and make it infinitely sweeter than it ever could be before.

We are not lying. We do not make these things up. There are countless testimonies, countless changed lives; miracles reported, experiences chronicled. The power of The Father, The Son, and their Holy Spirit is undeniable to one who unconditionally believes.

You should have a different attitude, I think. Your lack of communication with God should have only spurred you to be more devoted; to love like Jesus loved, to give to the presence of God unconditionally. He will reveal himself to you in time, and everything you ever did will not be worth it enough.

I know how you feel. I remember I struggled through sleepness nights with Christianity; was it right for me? Was my whole life going to have to change for this alien notion? I would switch between leaving my Bible out for easy reading or boxing it up where I didn't have to worry about it... I was very troubled.

Finally I decided to just drop all my pretenses and give unconditionally to God and Jesus, whom I was falling in love with even without faith. My mind was telling me that I was wasting my time, but my heart pressed on; rather than honor Him with my lips and not with my heart, I gave my utmost love to Him but said nothing of it to anyone I knew, they still thought me an atheist.

In time, like wool pulled from my eyes, I began to see the reality of God in everything I did and saw and experienced. And when I prayed I could feel the air hum and my hands quivered in fear and adoration of Him, and feeling him there I was very afraid. But He presented Himself to me as my Heavenly Father, my friend, caretaker; the protecting and guiding Shepherd, to whom I was proud to be His sheep--I so loved Him and love Him that I would suffer Hell without complaint or rebuke to Him; I, like a church at night, would continue to love Him even in lack of his presence, knowing I had been subject to what He willed.

I believe it is this kind of love and devotion to our One God that is necessary for him to speak to you--complete faith in seeming blindness, and just when one is hanging between grace and doubt, He is revealed unquestionably--and what more in life could trouble you, after the presence of God?

Amen, Serapha. I had prayed the sinners prayer, too. But, just last night, I asked for the in-filling of the Holy Spirit, the baptism of the /Spirit, and it actually felt like I thought my original conversion was going to feel like. :)

There are no words to describe it, accept to say you do feel reborn.

Hi there!

you know what answer becomes more and more plausible to me? that i've been dreaming. that this idea of a God who cares about me... it's a dream, it's a fairy tale. that i've been getting calloused knees for an echo off the ceiling. that starts sounding more and more like a legitimate answer every time I hear another person tell me that i've just got to "say the sinners prayer, and really mean it, and live a life for him"

i'm getting to the end of my rope.
then let go of the rope.

I got news for you. If you are a repentant sinner, God hears your prayers, and those prayers have been answersed with a yes, a no, or a wait.

For whatever reason, you aren't hearing that answer to your prayers... but that doesn't meant that the "communication" has been lost.

Remember...from the book of Daniel, it took three weeks one time for Daniel to hear from God because of the interference of warring angels that withheld the messenger from God. When you enter the spiritual realm, it is spiritual warfare, and if your answers are being held up, there is a reason, and the answer will get to you eventually.

Drop the attitude that you "expect" to hear from God or else you are selling Christianity out. If you are so certain that your prayers aren't being answered, I have have news for you there also. If your prayers aren't answered yes, no, or wait, then it is is because God isn't hearing them... God only hears the prayers of repentant sinners.

Now, if people are telling you to say the sinner's prayer again... there's a reason... it is because they know God only hears the prayers of repentant sinners.

Pray about it again, but this time, before you pray, drop the attitude, the "spirit of frustration and anger"... because that alone will hinder your prayers. as will the "spirit of confusion" which comes from satan. Seek the "spirit of a humble servant", praise God in all things--even unanswered prayer-- and let go and let God.

again, please define relationship. in communication, do you hear his voice? do you see any kind of tangible sensory manifestations of his message? or is it all in your head? if so, (and i'd gladly accept even this) how do you know it Is God? how do you know it's not just your own desires?

anyway, i'm not out to attack anyone. but please, please, before you guys tell me again to really say the sinners prayer, and really mean it, get this.

I already said the sinners prayer. I was a "practicing" christain for going on 6 years. I did everything I was supposed to do, I did it as best I coud, i meant it as best I could. I was humble. I made mistakes, as anyone does, but I tried to fix them to please God. I had an attitude of service. no entitlement during my belief. now, and only now, do I feel these ways.

please, please please understand this. it's exasperating to say the same thing over and over.

why should I humble myself, when I spent literally years that way, and nothing came of it?
I know this is a long, poorly formatted answer, but why be humble. Why have a sense of humility?

Here are a bunch of passages on humility. I am cutting and pasting the text from my bible software's version of Easton's Bible Dictionary:
a prominent Christian grace (Rom. 12:3; 15:17, 18; 1 Cor. 3:5-7; 2 Cor. 3:5; Phil. 4:11-13). It is a state of mind well pleasing to God (1 Pet. 3:4); it preserves the soul in tranquillity (Ps. 69:32, 33), and makes us patient under trials (Job 1:22).
Christ has set us an example of humility (Phil. 2:6-8). We should be led thereto by a remembrance of our sins (Lam. 3:39), and by the thought that it is the way to honour (Prov. 16:18), and that the greatest promises are made to the humble (Ps. 147:6; Isa. 57:15; 66:2; 1 Pet. 5:5). It is a "great paradox in Christianity that it makes humility the avenue to glory."

my expectation that God should communicate with me on some kind of recognizable plane is too high? man, God must really not want to strain himself.

I believe you have total disrepect for God, that is why you can not find him. Change your attitude, if your really want to find him. He is real, but he will not make him self known to you until you soften your heart.

Okay, well, you also seem angry at God, too. Are you expecting Him to break through that anger and prove you wrong? I doubt it works that way. You have to let go of any anger you may (or may not) have. I say it that way in case I misjudged and you aren't angry at God. :)

look, I'm angry. i'm dissapointed. I feel let down. I'm sorry if I should just shove all those aside and give God the benefit of the doubt, but to be honest, i'm not sure he deserves it. In all my years of doing that (giving him the benefit of the doubt), he never showed up. so why should he now?

Toecutter, I don't hear God's voice. Nothing like that. It's more I believe that if something good happens to me, it's because I have done something to please Him. If something bad happens, I understand that maybe God is doing it to show me the path he wants me to choose. I pray to him when I need help, and if you believe, and the request is God's will, it will come true. But you must believe with all your heart that God is good, He is eternal and He is with you, even if you aren't with Him. You must trust Him. God shows me his presence by rewarding me with things I never thought possible. An example is my little brother. He has a terminal illness. We found out he had it when he was a very young baby. The doctors told us he would only live 6 months at the most so prepare for the worst. My mum told my litter brother and sister that Jesus may want to take our little brother and look after him Himself. They accepted this, and they accepted that God will look after him no matter what. Christopher is now almost 5 years old, and a very healthy boy. We love him unconditionally and we know that God has permitted us to keep him with us, because we believed He would look after him.

Seriously, all your years? You're 17. You said that you sought God for 6.

Considering all that he has done for you, 1000 years of service is not enough. For you he suffered agony and death. For you he tore a rift in the Trinity itself, suffering eternal pain so that you can have eternal joy. He has held every breath in his hand from day 1 and if it weren't for his faithfulness you would not be alive today, let alone have the capacity to ask these kinds of questions. He has preserved and protected you, and here you are saying that he doesn't deserve your respect, simply because he doesn't speak to you in the way which you demand.

You're talking about the King of the universe as though he is your inferior and must bow to your whims. Is he your servant, that he must "show up" when you ask? Can *you* create a star, raise the dead, or change a heart?

And yet when we humble ourselves before Him and repent of our sins, he lifts us up, cleanses us, restores us, and makes us his children! What right have we to complain of anything?

It is true that sometimes we do struggle and fight with God, as did many in the Bible (David, most famously). Nevertheless, we eventually have to run back to him in the realization that he is still in control and has our best interests at heart. He knows what he's doing, and he loves us infinitely. We have to believe that even when we can't feel him or hear him or see him. And we have to keep pressing on, no matter how long it takes. Maybe God will NEVER reveal himself to you in the way that you desire... he is still worthy of all of your worship and service. He will still reward your faithfulness to him, and he will still continue to be faithful to you, even though you can't see it.

Hi,

When you asked "what right have we to complain of anything?", I thought of Job, and how God dealt with him (Job 38:1-40:2).

Just for the sake of those who don't want to go running for their bible, here it is. I apologize for the length of this post in advance. :)

Job 38

1 ¶Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
2 Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
3 Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
4 ¶Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
5 Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
6 Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
9 When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
10 And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
11 And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
12 ¶Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
13 That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
14 It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
15 And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
16 Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
17 Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
18 Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
19 Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
20 That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
21 Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
22 Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
23 Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
24 By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
25 ¶Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
26 To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
27 To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
28 Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
29 Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
30 The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
31 Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
32 Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
33 Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
36 Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
37 Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
38 When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
39 Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
40 When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
41 Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.

Job 39

1 ¶Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?
2 Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?
3 They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.
4 Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.
5 Who hath sent out the wild *** free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ***?
6 Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.
7 He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.
8 The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.
9 Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?
10 Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?
11 Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?
12 Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?
13 ¶Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?
14 Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,
15 And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.
16 She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
17 Because God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.
18 What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.
19 ¶Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?
20 Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.
21 He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.
22 He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.
23 The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield.
24 He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.
25 He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
26 ¶Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?
27 Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?
28 She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.
29 From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.
30 Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.

Job 40

1 ¶Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said,
2 Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.

Being angry and disappointed at God are very valid, very human emotions. Allow yourself to feel these things, and tell Him. God, I'm ticked. And tell Him why. God I'm hurt, I'm disappointed, and tell Him why. Be honest. Look at the psalms, David was not always pleased with his lot in life and he told God exactly how he felt about it.

Healing is process, but try not to equate it TOO much to salvation, thought that be a process as well. Give yourself time and surround yourself with uplifting edifying people, those who will affirm you, who will listen to you, who will give you a hug... not just throw bible verses at you and expect you to change the way you feel immediately. :)

I'll say a prayer for you.

Michelle
