John 3:16 is a great verse, but I don't use it much any more. One of the verse I use to teach is Rom10:17 because many read over it, but truly don't under stand what it saying. In my life time I have yet to run into some on who sees this verse for what it is say.

My favourite verse is actually 1 Cor 13:8 (I think it is I'm pretty hopeless at remembering chapters and verses ) where Paul talks about love ("love is patient, love is kinds etc").

The past few months, I've been stuck on Hebrews 11:1:

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

I've referenced it several times in my Sunday school class, as there seems to be a lot of adults in my class who "struggle with their faith." I love this verse because, to me it states quite clearly that there is nothing to struggle with. God loves us... Plain and simple. I don't believe it... I know it.

And that's faith.

Matthew 17:20 (The Mustard Seed verse)

and Romans 5:8 (The verse that says God loved us so much that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.)

There are many many wonderful verses, (of course the entire Bible is wonderful) and some give me more comfort at different times- depending on the situation. That being said, I still stick to John 3:16 as my favorite verse. This verse is the very foundation of my faith, and a beautiful verse for witnessing.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

God loved us so very much that he sacrificed his one and only Son so that we may be saved. That, my friends, is beautiful.

I'm pretty partial to Romans 6:3-4.

Probably a fad. Probably heartfelt. Who knows?

I've never been great with verse memorization, but the ones that I do know are...

Okay... ya gotta understand I am a bit of a clown.... I like live for the "shock" factor and it is all about the sarcasim for me sometimes... and I know you can't "read" it online... so imagine a the goofiest person in your church saying this.. I get sorta peevish over the John 3:16 thing... Soooo when someone ask me "what's your favorite verse in the Bible?" I reply with " Song of Solomon 1 15-16 "How beautiful you are my darling! Oh how beautiful! your eyes are doves. How handsome you are my lover! Oh how charming! and our bed is verdant!" You wouldn't BELIVE the conversations this one opens up to. People forget this book in the Bible!!! LOL!!! and the ones who are lookin for a fight can't contest it...lol.. and *giggle* I like to see 'em blush. buuut it also shows that God isn't hateful or stingy or all about punishing us for our every move... he created us to love. To love another and to love and glorify Him. It is, let's face it, one of the more "liberal" books of the Bible too. I think people (especially non-christian never been in chruch people) have this idea that God is all about punishment and rules. When in truth He created us to love and BE loved. ( Am I sounding lie a hippie yet? ) *shrug*

but if you are truly asking my my fav verse... there is a list about two pages long... and it depends on what scripture I need to hold onto at the moment...if ya catch my drift... what kinda shape my heart/soul/body is in.

Gotcha.

I think that's my issue with it too. I have a tendency to dig my heels in and resist what's been done to death. It's the same kind of thing as a song I used to love, but it's been played on the radio so much that I'm sick of it and now I never want to hear it again. I have heard John 3:16 so much that I now hear only sounds and syllables. I have to really think to grasp the meaning of the words. To me, hearing too much focus on John 3:16 is like having a high school English teacher who still wants you to practice writing the alphabet. Sure the alphabet is the basis of all writing, and you can't write anything else without knowing the alphabet first, but most high school students are ready to move past it.

Teach a parrot to repeat John 3:16 and three other verses, and you have a parrot that knows more than some Christians do.

Number 1 for me is a couplet:

Pro 26:4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you yourself also be like him.
Pro 26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own estimation.

I like the apparent contradiction. But when you ponder them a little longer, they're really quite penetrating.

Next I like

Pro 27:20 As Death and Destruction are never satisfied, so the eyes of a person are never satisfied.

It proves itself true every day, plus it reminds me of Spock's dissertation to Stonn in Amok Time.

Pro 17:28 Even a fool who remains silent is considered wise, and the one who holds his tongue is deemed discerning.

One of many of similar theme that unfortunately I ignore all too often. This one always brings to mind the "secular" proverb, "Better to close your mind and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and prove it."

Mine is John 12:24. When you understand that Jesus was explaining why His death was necessary not just for the remission of sin (Matthew 26:28), but to empower those who believed... it's like the most important thing Jesus said in my personal opinion.

Oh, the sweetness of those words! I could honestly see why so many people would pick it as their favorite verse.

The funny thing is lots of them don't actually think through the implications of what it actually says. "God so loved the world..." isn't compatible with a view of the future where God dumps it and takes people off to a disembodied heaven, which is what a good number of them believe.

A really mean question...
