  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A question?

And to answer your other sort-of question, no, leaving the magnetic field of Earth is not fatal. We did it on the Moon missions. The Moon has no magnetic field of its own. The magnetic field of Earth doesn't keep our nervous systems running. It DOES protect us from some of the side effects of solar flares. Hence, a journey into deep space would require shielding against the flares.

You have to remember. They went directly from one feild to another. The moon is held in orbit by the earth's magnetic field and it's own magnetic field. So no one really knows what happens when we go beyond that point. Man, I'd hate to be the first one to try it. Sounds like it might be a one way trip.

The moon does not have its own magnetic field. NASA was worried that their would be a burst of solar radiation during the moonwalks which would kill the astronauts because they were outside the earth's magnetic field.

The moon is held in orbit by the earth's gravitational field.

Hey guys look at the new M2P2 concepts. It is a magnetic protection system that also provides thrust for the spacecraft. It makes a big magnetic bubble arround the spacecraft and the solar wind pushes it. pretty cool stuff.

it was answered by a lot of people already, but here's some more things to think about:

1. the magnetic field of the earth is very different at the poles and equator and most places in between
2. it has about the strength of fridge magnet on your body
3. people have worked in very intense magnetic fields, including things like the electromagnet at scrapyards, scientific research, maglev trains, etc. that would, at least, nullify the effects of earth's magnetic field for a while. no ill effects.
