  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A question?

Sense the crash of the space shuttle. NASA has been pushing going to Mars. I have heard that if you leave the earth's magnetic field your nervous ststem will shut down and you will die. I also remember NASA doing some experiments on this in the 60's where they sent monkies into space and some came back dead because of this. So unless they find a way to put a self substainable manetic field on their ship they use to go to Mars. It will be worse than what just happened. Does anyone know anything about this?

A trip to Mars has been on Nasa's plate since the planning stages of the Apollo missions. Infact were already supose to be there but the budget cuts that Nasa went through just when Apollo was getting ramped up forced them to put it off and put it off and...

The killing radiation that you are talking about only occurs if the craft gets hit by a solar flare and is unshielded. Nasa has known about this since the days of Apollo and knows how to shield the craft so it isnot much of a problem.

You have to remember. They went directly from one feild to another. The moon is held in orbit by the earth's magnetic field and it's own magnetic field. So no one really knows what happens when we go beyond that point. Man, I'd hate to be the first one to try it. Sounds like it might be a one way trip.

They have also sent probes way, way into space and know the effects any loss of magnetic field has on the instruments inside. There has been no significant effect - the Earth's magnetic field is not all that strong, after all.

Nor does the moon have a magnetic field.

Lewis: Shielding is actually a big issue. I'm not so certain it's solved yet. Sticking the engine mass between the sun and the people in the ship might help, as might huge tanks of water. Or creating a very powerful magnetic field via superconducters..sort of like a storm shelter.

ISS and Shuttle don't have to worry about it, since they're inside the Earth's field. And with Apollo, they just played the odds.

With a Mars mission, they're more or less guaranteed to ride out at least one flare, even with the quick "18 month" transit path.

Speaking of which, I have a question. Please note that I am in no way suggesting that our landing on the Moon was a hoax: I 100% believe we went there, walked there, drove around there, brought back material, etc.

One point an "it was a hoax" person brought up was that video showed the US flag "blowing in the wind" in the background. Well, from what I have read, the Moon is both geologically and meteorologically dead. So what was blowing the flag? Solar wind?????

Oh I know that Morat, space travel is one of the things I keep tabs on. We have a few workable solutions but they have draw backs currently.

Solid/liquid shielding has the problem of getting a large ammount of mass off the earth and into orbit. That would take quite a few trips and the engines needed to start is moving then to stop it need to be all the bigger.

The magnetic shielding lets you cut back on the engine power you would need but it would mean putting two or more nuclear reactors into orbit and people tend not to like that idea.

In the end it will probably be a little of both when all is said and done.

Two things caused that...

First

On the first mission the rod that holds the top of the flag out, it's kind of like an extending radio antenna, was damaged and didn't extend all of the way leaving wrinkles in the flag. The astronauts thought this looked cool and never fully extended any of the other flag rods on further missions.

Second

Take a handkerchief and hold it by two corners, one in each hand, like the rod that held the top of the flag. Now start with your hands close together and move them apart, extinding the fabric like would of happened with the flag. You will get some rippling of the material not from wind but the act of unfolding it. This rippling soon stops on Earth because we have an atmosphere that adds friction and steals energy quickly from the rippling cloth. On the moon there is no atmosphere to slow the rippling effect so it lasts much longer.

The astronauts noticed this too and would smack the flag when they were posing for pictures next to it so it would look like it was waving in the wind.

What!?!?!

You were geven an answer, I'm sorry if it is not the answer that you wanted to hear, but it was an answer.

Here, let me rephrase and repeat.

If caught in a solar flare yes being outside of Earths magnetic field would be dangerous if you were in an unshielded craft. We have the tecnology today to be able to shield at least sections of a craft enough to make the voyage saftley.

I am sorry if space travel is not as impossible or dangerous as you might like it to be.
