Water level is a level of equal gravitational potential. On a spherical earth the centre of gravity is the centre of the sphere which makes the surface of the sphere identical to the level of equal gravitational potential.

A relatively new concept known as "gravity". Google Newton's Law of Gravity. It has been thoroughly confirmed. I have confirmed it myself.

The atmosphere moves with the earth so the aircraft's speed relative to the atmosphere and relative to the earth are the same. If the atmosphere did not move with the earth we would have 1000 mph E to W constant winds at the equator. These winds would decrease towards the poles.

Do you know how a vacuum works? How is the atmosphere held outside of the vacuum (space)?!?!?

Again gravity. However in spite of that we have lost most of the lighter elements (like H and He) in our atmosphere.

Till now my replies have not moved beyond high school physics. Our planet, our atmosphere, our solar system are well, but not completely, explained by Newtonian physics on the basis of laws he deduced 400 years ago.

If this was a game of monopoly, the get out of jail card would be called....."gravity". No one can explain what it is or where it comes from. Measuring it and observing it does not explain where it comes from, it could have different interpretation.

"Gravity" is holding the atmosphere but not the vacuum itself? LOL. I dont think you know what a vacuum is.

It is true that we do not yet have a solid theory on just what gravity is although there are a few viable theories none of which have been completely verified. That being said, we do know extremely well the effects of gravity to the point that we have sent probes to every planet in our solar system. BTW, I know very well what a vacuum is, I have been a scientist/mathematician/educator all my adult life.

I have, I fell asleep and woke up because my car ran out of gas.

Highway hypnosis can be a real problem. Glad you ran out of gas before you slammed into the Rockies.:D

Eh, I dunno'. All of the theories I've seen were still in the wild speculation stage. As per forces, in general, I have yet to see a good explanation as to the root cause of any of the basic forces. Physicists get so good at describing a thing that they sometimes forget that they haven't explained it yet.

How can we have sent probes, not to mention men to the moon when the Van Allen belt supposedly prevents us from doing so? Also, can you explain then how the vacuum of space is not extracting all the atmosphere of this earth when compared to the weakness of gravity which is supposed to be holding on to it?

So, if I can see the horizon and put a marker there, and then I drive my car past that point, how is this possible?

Google some hotel hallway look what happens on just few meters top and bottom goes to middle , but you know each room is same size and same distance in such hotel .

Essentially, the answer is your marker will disappear from your vision (if the road is level and flat) before it disappears over the horizon. A pair of binoculars or telescope will bring it back into view. That is why ships that 'disappear over the curve of the Earth' can be brought back into view by telescopes - it's not the curve obscuring them, it's just your vision.

The atmosphere is not totally transparent, and will eventually obscure objects (e.g. blue tinge of mountains).

More to the point how do you plan to put a marker at the horizon while you are stood far from it to mark it. Just how long are your arms?

If you do need to split yourself in two to be at both places at once, why drive there? To pick yourself up to put yourself back together?

It is a rather outlandish question.

A flatlandish question maybe?

That's a good question. Will you run out with a marker for me? I'll yell really loud when you get to the point at which I can't see past.

You would notice that Sam gets to a point where you could see her, but you could not longer see the marker. As Sam moved further away, more and more of her body detail would be lost/blurred with surroundings.

Page 161 of Earth not a Globe, by Samuel Birley Rowbotham (1881) provides information on how visual detail is lost with distance.

If gravity holds atmosphere then what is wind ?
That's where the atmosphere is too slippery to hold, and gravity keeps trying to grab it, but can't quite get a good grip.

you can have wind 1 meter above ground...
If I were a heliocentrist, I'd answer - 'that's just the atmosphere trying to keep up with the Earth's spin. Gravity is mostly sticking it to the ground, but it slips a bit, 'cause it's old and tired'.

Then you could rightly ask, 'Where is the relationship between Earth-spin and change in wind speed/direction, based on the location measured on the alleged ball-Earth?'

Then I would say 'There are other factors involved in wind speed.'

Then you would rightly say 'There is no evidence the alleged Earth-spin has anything to do with wind, and therefore, what is wind?'
