Was Eli a good father?

Eli's sons offered strange fire to the Lord...meaning that they did not do things according to the way that God had set forth. Eli as high priest, did nothing to stop them. Whether that is symbolic of Eli as a human father with adult sons or as a high priest, either way it didn't show wisdom on his part. The Aaronic priesthood was condemned by God because of Eli's actions. 1 Samual

btw Eli was not considered a judge ... Samuel who was to follow was a priest and judge

i read it here, but a couple of other places (although i'm not sure what being a judge meant...i just remember that Deborah was a judge)

Eli was also the only one in those early days in the history of our people who wore two crowns, for he was both Judge (Shofet) and High Priest. He became judge at the age of 58 years, after the death of Samson (Shimshon) in the year 2830 (or 2831), holding this office for forty years, until his tragic death at the age of 98 years.

he's not listed in the book of Judges?
I think his sons are mentioned at the end of the book....around the time the ark was taken from Shiloh by the Philistines....now that's an interesting study

I haven't read extensively.....

i'm hoping to get some feedback from others who may be more knowledgeable than i am on Eli....

i just started reading the book of Samuel....
Start with the last few chapters of Judges then into Samuel ... where the Benjaminites were almost wiped out...gruesome stuff

Was Eli a good father?
One can be a good parent, but that doesn't mean their children will be good, IMHO.

Anyway, the sons of Eli did evil in the eyes of the LORD and they were later struck down......

1Sa 2:
22 Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel;
and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
23 And he said unto them, "Why do ye such things?
for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.
24 Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear:
ye make the LORD'S people to transgress."
34 And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.

1Sa 4:11
And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
18 Then it happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell off the seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy.
And he had judged Israel forty years.

...hmmmmmmmm.....yeah, it's hard to know based on those verses you posted if Eli was a good father or not.....

it seems he should've prob'ly known what his sons were doing tho' before reports came in? Although it says he was very old.....
