• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ok, so my doctor just put me on antidepressants and i was wondering, people who have experience with this sort of thing, how long does it ususally take for you to be "cured" from depression? I've also heard people say that they can make you actually have worse mood swings. Is this true?

It takes about a month for the effects to start in SSRIs (the most commonly prescribed type of antidepressants). Other types of antidepressant medication may work faster. They do not "cure" depression, but reduce the symptoms by something like 50% after a few months.

There is a caveat with worse mood swings and suicide when SSRIs are started, especially in children and adolescents-- there is a black box warning about this. If you notice suddenly more severe depression or suicidal feelings, immediately get help.

The pharmacy should've given you a printed information sheet about the medication you have that will have more information on it. If you Google for the medication's name and "prescribing information" you will likely find very detailed data regarding the questions you asked. You can also probably call your doctor, or the pharmacy.

I agree with everything Frangible said.
I know that when I started my medicine, I actually got worse, my anxiety and depression, which the doctor said would probably happen. It has to do with the levels in your body trying to even out. It took about two/ two and a half weeks before i started to feel the side affects go away. And then I know lexapro took about three months before I started to feel the benifits. And of course, sometimes the dose has to be changed, like in my case.
Again, depression isn't cured by medication, it's just a help. Don't expect the medicine to be the quick fix, but work towards healing yourself, that will take time.
When I was 15 I was put on prozac which seemed to take also about two or three months.
Because of your age, please make sure to monitor your moods. Teenagers are at a higher risk of turning more depressive and suicidal. My mom and my doctor monitored me closely, and I was okay, so just keep an eye out!
God Bless!!

thank you so much guys. I really appreciate the help and prayers. I seriously am so glad i am on meds, i was just on my final straw. I was actually like, cutting and stuff, and it is probably largely due to my age, but I cannot wait to finally feel better. Even just knowing I'm doingSOMEthing is like an emotional crutch. I am, however, somewhat discouraged to hear that i will never be "cured" of dpression.

I have been on meds for a couple years, I have to say stick with your doctor. Every one is different. Meds do help just give it time with meds. Let your doctor know if you are experiencing strange thoughts. Anti depressants are a God blessing but not one med works for anybody it takes work because we are unique. No matter what do not quit without your doctor's direction. I have in the past gone off my meds bad idea. God gave the gift of this med so my advice is to keep in touch with your doctor

dont think thats the best fro depression but hey ho..

yeah the side affects are strange..

if you want them to wok as soon as DONT and i mean DONT miss ANY. remeber to take every one.
it will hep it work faster.

the leaght of time depends on 3 things (in my opinon)
1 that you dont forget to take them
2 the type of tablets
3 the events in your life.

hope that answers your question a little.

seening you lots of love
